1000 Voices Speak for Compassion
In a million years, I never thought I would be part of something like this.
I was never a joiner. I didn’t belong to a whole lot of clubs in school. I didn’t run for student council. I was just sort of quietly part of my one or two things, did them with gusto, stayed out of the limelight and off of the bandwagon.
When my Daughter came along and it was time to do the Mommy thing, I did not hang out with other moms. The word playdate made me cringe. For the preschool classroom parties, I was the napkin mom. I did not bake and I most certainly did not volunteer in the classroom.
But people change. Or maybe we don’t really change so much as figure out who we were really meant to be in the first place. Either way, sometimes we find ourselves face to face with something too good, too right to not take part.
That’s what happened to me.
On February 20, 2015, United Nations World Day of Social Justice, one thousand bloggers will join their voices to speak through their blogs about compassion. I will be one of them.
Why?
Read the headlines. Look out your window. Walk down the street. You already know why. I don’t have to list and link the stories here. You already know. Far too many days I see the news and find myself wondering, “What is wrong with people?” We can sit and try to answer that or we can prove that there is so much right with people. It’s out there. Compassion, kindness…it exists.
So join us, won’t you? Help us spread the word. Visit the 1000 Voices Speak for Compassion Facebook page. Sign up to add your blog post to the effort. Ask to join the Facebook group. Use the hashtag #1000Speak to promote this event.
And if you don’t have a blog or aren’t on Facebook or social media? We’ve got you covered. Visit the #1000Speak for Compassion site at http://1000speak.wordpress.com/ and join in.
Help make all of our voices heard.
Oh, and just for the record? I’ve survived a few playdates. I’m not the napkin mom anymore and I’ve actually helped with a classroom party or two. In the room. See? Change is possible. All it takes is a little willingness to make a difference in someone’s life.
FRIST!
Oh Lisa this makes me SO HAPPY to read…not to mention that those precise words, with that precise inflection (though I went with capitals rather than italics) are ones that Yvonne cites as being part of her inspiration for this. WOW
And BOY are we ever showing the world what’s RIGHT WITH US! Over 800 of us. And children. All raring to go.
This. Is. Incredible.
And thank you so much for your support and for JOINING Facebook for this. I’m glad you’re a joiner 😀
You are indeed FRIST! And on a not-TToT post, too. Now THAT is incredible. 😀
I love this. And I’m glad to be part of it! (And the other THING if you must know – it’s been nice to be so well-received. Kind of like being a celebrity for ten seconds.)
Loved the spirit & passion in your words!
🙂
Thanks! And thank you for coming by and reading. Join us!
Lisa, this is a beautiful post. I, too, know this is a “meant to be” connection. Did you post this on your Facebook wall? I’ll check, then I’ll share it.
Thanks, Val. I think I did. If not, yes, help a girl out!
This is such a beautiful post. I am so glad that I found your blog 🙂
Thank you, Dannii! Glad I found yours, too. I have enjoyed reading about your journey and love your recipes!
We don’t change but just figure out who we were really meant to be…fantastic. I never thought of it like that.
Thanks, Christine. I think that’s often true. Some just take longer than others op get there.
Interesting concept. The lawyer in me wants more info about the start-up of the site and who started it. I ‘liked’ it because I like your message. I, too, like the quote that Christine mentioned – well said!
Thank you, Shel. The paranoid Catholic school kid in me now wonders why the lawyer in you is interested in the start up. I’ll email you.
Back again. :)) thank you for the early heads up on this special day. I’m off to check out the FB page. Kudos to you for embracing change. I was like you. Ended up as PAC cochair (Canadian PTA) after originally pondering if I’d even attend meetings …
Thanks for re-commenting, Kelly! I find I need those glasses more and more, thank you mid-40s.
I never liked change much but as I get older and my daughter influences me more, I find myself less uncomfortable with it.
See you on the #1000Speak page!
This is such a sacred space, Lisa. I’m so glad to have been brought here through this movement of heart and soul.
Pleased to meet you.
Truly.
With blessings,
Dani
Glad to meet you, too, Dani! I’ll be hopping over to read at your place in just a bit.
I love love love that we’re going to do this. It’s going to be amazing. xxoo
PS playdate is very much a word like “moist” as it implies icky sticky ick.
I love it, too, Kristi!
Most – LOL. That’s gross and hilarious. Playdate is such a dirty word. What happened to just playing together? I never had such a thing as a playdate and I socialized just fine. My only social issues are the ones I choose to have! 😀
I like some of the others above me love your words about not so much changing as figuring out who we were meant to be in the first place. I went from never wanting to have kids to two years as PTA president once my 2 children entered school. The napkin moms are my favorites because they’re the smart, fun ones 😉 This certainly intrigues me. I’ll have to go check it out.
Thank you, Jean. True story? I never wanted kids, either. Or I thought I didn’t. Or I told myself that. The first time it entered my mind was when the Hub and I started to talk about it. Guess that’s how you know it’s meant to be.
Hm, maybe I should go back to being the napkin mom so I can be in the smart, fun group!
Do check it out, Jean. I think it’s going to – already is – very cool.
Well done, Weldon.
You could be describing me, you know, except I’ve strangely become a joiner in the last year or two. I keep surprising myself.
Weldon. *snork* Love it.
Yeah, I don’t know what’s happening to me, either. But if we are surprised by ourselves, that’s good, right? Means we’re growing or something.
AW! This is awesome Lisa!!! Yes to it ALL!! You don’t need to link to all that is going on in this world… it’s right outside all our doors.
WE can add the light. WE will add the light. 1000 little flickers make a HUGE BEAMING GLOW OF BRILLIANT SPARKS.
I am absolutely STOKED you are on FB now!! YAY!!!!! It’s such a great way to connect… you will LOVE IT. 🙂
Thanks, Chris. I’m so happy to be part of this.
I don’t know if I will say love…kind of overwhelming. But it sure does make it easy to check on you! 😀
So I read this . Loved it and thought it was the official blurb for the 1000 speak and promptly (accidentally) pilfered it…. sorry! I am off to give you credit right now! What a dope!
You’re not a dope. And even if you are, I still love ya!
Now, about me sounding like the “official blurb”…maybe I should try that for my next gig. Writing official-sounding stuff. Heh.
Thanks for the shoutout!

Lisa, I’m so glad you decided to join in because yours is one of my favorite “voices” in the blogosphere! I can’t wait to read your post in February, my friend. I already know you have a loving heart filled with compassion.
Get out! Really?? Jen, that is awesome and thanks for saying so. I can’t wait to read my post, either. What I have going on in my head is maybe great, definitely personal, and a little scary. I will come to the right conclusion, I’m sure. And really, thanks. You’re one of my favorites, too. 🙂
Thanks so much for joining in. I love that you’ve written about proving what is right with people!
Thanks, Yvonne. I’m glad to be part of it. Thank you so much (and Lizzi) for putting it all in motion. That’s the kind of right I’m talking about.
I love the idea of this. May we discover that compassion is highly contagious!
I love it too, May. Join us? What do you think?
I’m a part of this blogger group! I think the world is starving for compassion. We simply aren’t teaching it enough, I think. This is a great movement!
I’m so excited you’re in here, Andrea – I didn’t know’! I think it is great. It’s the thing that made me break down and get on Facebook, which I swore I would never do.
