Burying the Hatchet
He patted the key stored safely in his pocket and a look of smug satisfaction settled on his face as he walked down the street, away from the shuttered book store and away from her forever.
His pulse quickened for just a moment before he brushed an anxious thought away, regaining his composure by reminding himself that this time it was permanent; she would never hurt him again. His remembered her words the last time they spoke…surely she didn’t expect him to take this well, to “bury the hatchet” as she said and accept the consolation prize of friendship!?!?
“Bury the hatchet indeed,” he said to himself and laughed out loud just as he turned the corner and walked into two stern-faced suited strangers.
“Mr. Foxworth,” said the one with the sunglasses, “a moment of your time? We need you to answer a few questions…”
