Book Review – Mandi Castle’s Dear Stephanie
I’m expanding my horizons.
I honestly don’t read much contemporary fiction. But maybe I have to stop saying that.
Given the opportunity to read an advance copy of Mandi Castle’s Dear Stephanie, I jumped at it. I read Dear Stephanie in two sittings – and that was only because I had to sleep. I can’t pull an all-nighter with a book like I used to.
But for those who can, I promise you will. I devoured every delicious word.
The story is a literary delight for the reader in much the same way as a pâtisserie is for the dessert lover. It is tightly woven, surprising, and positively scrumptious. With each turn of the page, Castle’s words fly straight from the page to penetrate the heart and mind of the reader in ways that may surprise and even shock you. I fear I will reveal too much by telling even a little.
So I’ll move instead to my favorite part of this novel – our heroine.
Paige Preston is everything I hope my daughter will never be. She’s spoiled, manufactured, and far too beautiful. She is promiscuous and unscrupulous. She is egocentric. She has great difficulty loving, trusting, and managing successful relationships. She’s depressed and potentially suicidal. She’s a hot mess.
At first, I hated her. Castle’s descriptions of Paige and her behavior had me positively disgusted at one or two points. But just as a mother would love her troubled child, I found myself terribly in love with Paige. I wanted to help her, to teach her, to see her succeed. As the tale unwound, I encouraged, warned, and cheered her on. Paige made me laugh and cry. At one point, I had to step away from the book and go to sleep because it was just…too much.
Castle creates a character who is so substantive, so engaging, that you can’t help but be drawn to her, despite her many flaws and violent demons. You will find yourself breathless several times throughout the tale, right up to the very last unbelievable word.
I’ve heard some rumblings that readers may or may not have been dissatisfied with Castle’s choice for the ending. I disagree. I thought it was perfect. I won’t give out spoilers but I think I’m safe enough to say the ending clearly illustrates how choices bear consequence. Some are negative. Some are positive. Paige’s story urges readers to always hope and to always choose with consequence in mind.

*takes small bow*
This is the second great ‘review’ I’ve read, yup, need to read this book!
Thank you so much. I hope it lives up to your expectations.
You do. I think you’ll love it.
I just bought it! I love complex characters that I love and hate. (Ever read Vanity Fair?! There’s an awesome book with some crazy a– people in it, and I loved it! Can’t wait to get started on this one 🙂
Thanks, Katie!! I hope you enjoy the hot mess that is Paige Preston.
If you like Vanity Fair, Katie, you’ll love this.
Oh wow Lisa!! You have given us a good taste of this mystery!! Reading yours and Lizzi’s review makes me really REALLY want to read the book!! Now I’m totally curious about the ending too!!
They write fabulous reviews, don’t they? It’s a gritty R rated book that delves into the mind of a twisted heroine, and it’s not for the light of heart, but just when you think you hate her, Paige will turn you, and you’ll be cheering for her. I hope if you read it, you enjoy it, Christine.
You will just have to get the book, Chris… 😉 I can’t wait to hear your take on the end.
And Mandi – twisted heroine is exactly what she is! I found myself between love and hate with her all the way through. You done good!
Lisa, this review is fabulous. Thank you so much for reading and for taking the time to write such a great and thorough review. If I didn’t want to read it before, I do now, but I already know how it ends, so I’ll leave it to your readers to see if they agree/disagree with your suggestion. Thank you for being on my team!! I’m gong to share this all over the place now.
Thank you, Mandi. Happy to be on your team. I wish I had been well enough to run it last week as planned, but I’m kinda happy it came out today with the release because now they can go get it instantly!
You ladies are very convincing in your reviews. This book sounds right up my alley.
Definitely check it out, Kerry.
Excellent take on the book, Lisa. Paige is not easy to love, but you find yourself loving her nonetheless.
So what’s next?
Thanks, Helena. You kind of want to hate her, but can’t help yourself.
Next week I’m one of the stops on Marcia Kester Doyle’s blog tour so I’ll be reviewing her book, Who Stole My Spandex?
This one looks really good. I just downloaded it to my Kindle.
