Five Friday Favorites – Get Out of My Head Edition
Since it’s still Friday, I can just get this one in under the wire before I head off to bed – early. Again.
I think I may have the flu.
This week’s favorites are the Five Really Cool Songs I’ve Had Stuck in My Head at Various Points this Week for Various Reasons. Here we go…
1. Life is a Highway, the Tom Cochrane original, actually made its way into my brain by way of May’s post over at Achieving Clarity. The newer version by Rascal Flatts (yup, the one from the movie Cars) isn’t bad at all. In fact, it’s quite fun. But the Cochrane is the real deal.
2. Sister Golden Hair by America got stuck in my head twice. First, on my way to my classroom first thing in the morning when I walked by a student strumming it in the hallway. Yes, for real. And no, I do not teach at the school from Fame. Hummed my own little version of that all day, including the “nearh nearh nearhhhhhh” guitar parts.
3. Doctor My Eyes by Jackson Browne was an interruption. Another classic, this baby jumped in by accident when I was in the middle of singing Sister Golden Hair in my head and somehow got distracted by something. When I came back to the song, I was singing this rather than the America song. Spent the rest of the day convinced this was the song the guitar kid was playing, even though I knew it wasn’t. That really made my brain hurt.
3.5. Sister Golden Hair reprise. Hehe – Sister Golden Hair surprise…reprise… Told you I was tired.
4. Don’t You Forget About Me by Simple Minds has been in the back of my brain since I wrote my Detention post earlier this week. It’s The Breakfast Club, people. It’s awesome. As soon as I hit publish, I am going to go hit the play button on the DVD player and watch it. Perhaps that will get it out of my head. Of course, the part where Bender sings “I wanna be an Air Force Ranger….” while he runs around the hallways will probably jump in.
5. Take on Me by A-HA is quite possibly one of the happiest sounding songs ever because of that cool instrumental hook – you know the one – and especially the extended part that starts at 2:13. Just a cool and happy song. Besides – the video? Where the girl jumps into the pencil-drawn comic and falls in love with the dude who has almost exactly the same haircut as she does? Come on.
What are your favorite songs? Or what are the songs that stick in your brain and torture you? Put them in the comments!
Happy weekend, Friends!
I love Jackson Browne! As for songs that get stuck in my head and torture me, anything by Maroon 5 is a #1 offender!
I also get “Lawyers in Love” stuck in my head. No idea why. Kidzilla is currently bopping around the kitchen to “Moves Like Jagger.” started grooving the minute she heard it.
And I’m sure her daddy loves that…Haha!
Wasn’t his favorite tune ever, but her matching the movement style to the song style was impressive.
Copacabana, Barry Manilow. Basically every time I hear this song I envision my family doing a little interpretation of this song, a la The Cosby Show circa 1985. Pathetic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSvGdfOfLFw
Oh, that’s a good one!
First, I hope it was not really the flu but maybe just fatigue that could be cured by a good night’s sleep.
Second, what a fun post! Of course, Life is a Highway has been in my head all week too. I almost got out Cars and popped it in the DVD player and then I remembered I am 51 years old! lol
It turns out that at one point in my life the guy from America and I had the same glasses! I am sure I can work that little bit of trivia into conversations next week. (but not without appearing insane!)
Doctor My Eyes…..one of my favorites.
You reminded me that I need to find a copy of The Breakfast Club. My college aged kids tried to rent it over Christmas break and couldn’t find it.
And thank you for pointing out that the live girl and the comic boy have the same hair cut. Made me laugh so hard! I think at that moment in time I also had that haircut.
There are a couple songs that get stuck in my head. Right now I am trying so hard to force them out of my memory or as I fall asleep I will be doomed to hear them buzzing in my mind.
There is no age limit on fun movie viewing! Your comments here are hysterical – love the one about the guy from America and I definitely think you should work that into conversation whenever possible. The Breakfast Club is, alas, so “old” that it’s difficult to find. This is why I own it. 🙂
Oh, I love Jackson Browne. I once had Rock Me On the Water stuck in my head for a week. For some reason his songs can just creep into your head and stay there if you let them. Another one of his that got stuck in my head was Lawyers in Love. It’s a weird song, but really catchy.
A week is a long time for a stuck song…even a good one! I get Lawyers in Love in my head all the time.
