Five Friday Favorites (on Monday) – Thanksgiving Weekend Edition
I probably could have called this the “broken” edition of Friday Favorites considering we have a broken microwave and at least two other things around the house that need to be repaired. Do wild animals live here?
Instead, I have simply collected my favorites from this long holiday weekend in hopes that it will make up for the fact that I was just too lazy from all the Thanksgiving weekend eating to do Friday Favorites on time…or do an original Monday post.
Hey, at least I’m honest.
Favorite new way to order pizza: Hot peppers and fresh garlic. It is amazing. The first time I ordered it this way was several weeks ago and it was quite by accident. According to Fab Hub, I was actually asleep when I requested those toppings, but was somehow able to communicate pizza choices to him from my sleep-induced stupor. This combo probably won’t get you a kiss under the mistletoe or help you make new friends at a holiday party, but if you’re OK with that, go ahead and give it a try.
Favorite malapropism of the weekend: After a successful wedding gown shopping trip last week, I had a nice lunch with Super Sister and Our Mom. At some point, we were discussing our general disdain for turkey and considering other options for a decent Thanksgiving meal. We speculated that the early settlers most likely enjoyed a meal of roast pheasant or lobster, considering they were on Cape Cod, after all. Conversation continued until someone mentioned that they probably ate Sasquatch. What someone meant was Squanto, their Native American guide and friend. (Although I still doubt very much that they ate him, which makes the statement even more ridiculous.) In attempting to re-tell the story correctly later, Sasquatch aka Squanto somehow became succotash. Still not right, but at least a more appropriate culinary selection.
Favorite thing we did on at least one day this weekend: Nothing. Yes, that’s correct – absolutely nothing. Every now and then it is good for the human person to enjoy a day of absolutely no commitments, no errands, no chores, no obligations. A day to stay in pajamas all day and watch movies if one so chooses. And so we did. At least once. Maybe more than once.
Favorite thing Kidzilla thinks she wants to make that I find horrifying: Fruitcake. Yes, fruitcake. As in that weird brownish stuff with the weird jellyish candied fruit stuff in it. Nobody likes fruitcake – or so I thought. When I told my Mom of Zilla’s interest, she revealed that she actually likes the stuff. I believe we may actually pick a day to attempt to make this abomination delightful holiday treat. Zilla loves to bake so she will enjoy the process. Mom will eat it. Memories will be made. I’m game. I’ll be spending the next week searching for a recipe so if you have any to offer up, send them my way!
Favorite ridiculous thing I do at the end of a holiday break: Stay up late (sometimes intentionally, sometimes not so intentionally) in what is most likely a vain effort to make the break last longer and squeeze out every blasted minute of respite from the daily grind.
I’m off to do that right now…still wearing my Thanksgiving pants, of course, because there has been a more than adequate amount of holiday eating!
Fruitcake? Geddaheckouttahere! Fruitcake is evil. Ah, the things we do for our children. 🙂
I think my response was something like “Fruitcake??? Are you freaking kidding me, girl??? Fruitcake is nasty.” This was in the middle of the market where lots of little old ladies looked at me like I was the anti-mother. Hence, the decision to try and make fruitcake.
There is a recipe for lighter fruit cake in the most recent issue of Cooking Light. I was intrigued… though not intrigued enough to actually consider making it…

Hm, maybe I’ll have the Hub pick that up when he goes to the store – thanks for the tip. I found an interesting one from Food Network – Alton Brown has one that’s more dried fruits and nuts rather than the strange red and green candided stuff. I think I’m probably going to do a “traditional” and a lighter version. Pretty sure the real stuff has like 700 calories a slice – yikes! I’ll have to keep my Thanksgiving pants on until February!
I *love* dark fruit cake! (The light is just meh). Am I a weirdo…don’t answer that! I am all over your hot peppers and fresh garlic pizza…that sounds delish. (But with some Scope as a chaser!)
OK, good to know. I am currently trying to decide between the traditional booze-soaked dark version with the weird red and green candied stuff or a lighter, healthier option. Maybe I should do both and have a fruitcake throwdown.
