Friday Five – Bet You Didn’t Know…
I’ve been cooking up a few new ideas for the blog.
Now that we’re into the new year, I’m hoping to start incorporating them. Don’t expect a monster blog reveal or a big announcement about stuff. I’m just going to start sliding them in and see how things go. So if you like something, let me know? And if not, well, I guess you should tell me that, too.
For starters, I’m going to return (sort of) to the Friday Favorites I used to do. But not exactly. I’m going to do some kind of Friday Five (I know, how original) but it might be five good recipe links, or five random facts, five good books, or five things I lost at some point that week. I’m going to see how it works.
This week, let’s start with five things about me that you probably didn’t know…
I don’t like ice cream. Seriously. I never really have. I think I’ve gone through periods where I do kind of enjoy it, but then I remember that I don’t find it all that interesting. If I do eat it? Vanilla.
Aside from a brief affair with red hair in my 20s because I thought it looked cool, I have yet to color my hair. The few grays I do own grow in a kicky little stripe above my left eye. Kind of like that woman on What Not to Wear – Stacy London? I look just like her, really.
Anyway, when I went from the red back to my natural color (via dye, not the growing out process), my Grandmother, always the truthsayer, said to me, “I like this shade so much better than your natural red color.”
I love hot and sour soup. I do. The best hot and sour soup I ever had came from a Chinese restaurant that closed years ago. Not cool. Second best hot and sour soup that I found to replace the best? Came from a Chinese restaurant that also closed. Since then, I have been on an exhausting quest to find great hot and sour soup. I have found some that are acceptable. I have found some that are awful. None compare to those two places. So I gave up and started making my own. I have a great recipe, which I will share with you soon.
When I was a teenager, I absolutely loved horror movies. My high school BFF and I would see everything that even resembled horror. We loved them. I also loved a good horror novel. Ann Rice’s Mayfair Witches trilogy was one of my favorites. And then, all of a sudden, one day I could not do the horror thing any more. I’m pretty sure it’s because I finally saw The Exorcist and that shit was just too real for my blood. So now I can’t watch anything even remotely horror-ish unless it’s so ridiculous it’s laughable. Like the one where the roller coasters kill people or something. Silly. But make no mistake – it will be a long time before I will even entertain the thought of letting Zilla ride one. Just saying.
I have been able to hear trains from the open window of every place I’ve ever lived. It’s never been intentional but I think it’s pretty cool. I love the sound of trains and it’s kind of in my blood – my Father and his Father both were pretty avid train collectors. My Grandfather on my Mom’s side also enjoyed trains, especially under the tree at Christmastime. With three cats and a townhouse with relatively limited floor space, that is not happening here. I’ll just zoom these little guys around and see how the Rotten Cats feel about it.
Your turn: While I’m chasing the cats around with little Thomas the Tank Engine dudes, share some lesser known facts of your own. What are some things we probably don’t know about you?
Lizzi once claimed that she didn’t like ice cream. We’ve since proved her wrong. 🙂
I have never even heard of hot and sour soup. Perhaps it’s because we never go to Chinese restaurants.
Hilarious that your grandmother thought you had red hair!
Little known fact…I spent two summers working for the Ohio Dept. Of Transportation. One was in the radio room, answering the phone and directing the guys to where they were supposed to be. The second one I spent the entire three months pounding rust off of trucks and plows to prepare them for painting. I loved it.
That is one of my favorite things my Grandmother ever said! And hey good to know my natural color meets approval!
Those jobs sound fascinating – especially the rust one. Who even knew there was such a thing? That could easily become quite meditative I would think.
I feel the Exact Same Way about trains. The sound of a train as you’re falling asleep? So comforting. Or exciting. Makes me think of George Bailey.
I might, just might, have to disown you because of the ice cream thing. But only after you link me up this afternoon.
You DON’T LIKE ICE CREAM?!?! Crazy woman.
I really don’t do ice cream. I know everyone thinks it’s weird. Very rarely does it appeal to me.
Trains are such a familiar thing to me. I think if we were top move I’d put that on my of points to consider – can we hear trains?
I will link you up after our farmers market run this afternoon!
I can’t do horror movies and could barely do them as a teenager. Poltergeist scared me and still does. I can’t watch it. They are heeeeere. *shudder* I’ll be hiding under the blankets. I did enjoy Sharknado though and am excited to watch the sequel on Netflix sometime because that could never actually happen, right? Let’s see little known fact about me…oh, how about that I sent a letter to ABC (I was pretty young 😉 ) when they canceled the television show Hart to Hart. I watched it on one of those oldies stations not too long ago and think that maybe ABC made a good decision after all.
Haha – Sharknado is one of those so ridiculous ones that I can handle. When it first came out, I watched Poltergeist over and over and over, even thought it scared the daylights out of me. To this day, though, I still can’t handle the sight of a clown doll and I always leap into bed…you know, just to make sure! 😉
I remember Hart to Hart! Wow. Just saw the actress from it in a Hallmark channel movie or something, which got me and my Mom to talking about it. She looks pretty good – Stephanie Powers, was it? Richard Wagner, though, looks way older than she does.
Don’t like ice cream???? I WISH I didn’t like it! Especially because nowadays I am only eating vegan ice cream which is really not as good as the “real thing”. I’m with you on vanilla, though. I also love the Mayfair witches trilogy and have one of my hardcover copies autographed by Anne Rice. A friend took my copy with her to a book signing in NYC and got it for me. I once lived in an apartment where I could hear the train and I actually did enjoy the sound. I like the concept of the Friday Five and I’m looking forward to learning more about you next week!
Not like “eew I hate it and I won’t ever eat it.” More like I don’t find it especially interesting. It’s just…meh.
A copy autographed by Rice? Awesome. I think I’m going to re-read that trilogy this year. I really loved them. Have you ever read any of her sister’s work? Alice Borchardt? I started a Guinevere trilogy by her and then, sadly, she died before finishing the third.
I like the Friday Five – I liked doing them way back when the blog was really new. Somewhere along the line I just fell out of doing it. I’m excited to bring it back.
It’s the same for me about the trains! I can’t hear them in my actual house so I had to get adapted to relax with sounds of cars and motorbikes, with every engine on the road at night!
Hi, Lily. I think you can probably get used to just about any sound and find it comforting.

I love your Friday Five!! I can’t stand horror movies, never have been able to stomach them. I have seen scenes from The Exorcist and you are so right- that shit is too real for me.
Trains- that is really cool Lisa. And I laughed SO hard at what your gm said about your hair. LOLOLOL!!! God bless that sweet lady!!
Glad you like the Friday Five, Chris. I’m thinking about a linkup for it – what do you think?
Isn’t that a great one from my Grandmother? One of my favorite things she said ever. She was hilarious and yes, very sweet. I miss her like crazy.
I used to do a similar thing on Fridays several years ago and would be happy to join in if you do a link-up. It’s kind of a relaxing way to summarize the week in some fashion.
I loved your grandmother’s comment too, a compliment she didn’t even realize she was giving. I colored my hair from the time I turned 35 until I met Papa Bear, he loves the natural look and so do I, and his grows more silver white by the day. It’s wonderful! I am proud of ever white hair in my head, I’ve earned them! :-). The older I get the more comfortable I am with who I am now, rather than trying to be something I’m not anymore or maybe never was.
I’ve done a lot of fun facts on my blog, and I’ve shared a lot more, but maybe there are still folks who don’t know that I lived in a couple communal situations when I was much younger, back in the early 70’s, and I still think there is some to be said for that way of life. 🙂
Josie, that would be awesome! I would love to have you link up. And good to know there is some interest because how sad would it be to do one and have nobody come to the party? 🙁
I love what you said about “trying to be something I’m not anymore or maybe never was.” You know, that’s exactly where I’m at. I’m learning to be comfortable with who I am, even if that is not someone I would have dreamed I was five or ten years ago. Does that make sense?
I did not know that about you and I think that’s pretty cool. Now I kind of see you hanging out being in the film Hair, which is probably really stereotypical of me, but that’s the thought I got!
I love things like this because i feel it gets me to know you deeper. I used to be into horror movies when I was younger too, but I just can’t get into them like I used to. I don’t know, I guess my tastes have changed a bit.
Thanks, Steve – I’m glad it worked. The idea was actually from another blogger friend, Eli at Coach Daddy. I was in a huge writing slump and that was among the suggestions he sent. It was fun to pull some things together and I hope to do more.
Tastes do change, that’s true. On the flip side, I’ve found other things I always hated and now quite enjoy so it evens out!
[…] my Friday post, please do. It’s genius, really. I couldn’t figure out if I wanted to do my Friday Five or jump in on the Finish the Sentence Friday prompt. Inspiration hit me while I was reading […]
