Ten Things of Thankful – The Off Week Edition
Our week has been really…off.
Everyone’s schedule has been altered in one way or another this week. Kidzilla had a school holiday. I had a teacher in-service day and an early dismissal day. The Fab Hub started his online classes. It feels like we haven’t quite gotten the hang of the week yet…and now it’s over.
All off-ness aside, though, we still have a great wrap-up of things for which we are Thankful. Here we go…
1. I am thankful that the Fab Hub seems excited about his online classes. He has jumped in with enthusiasm for the courses and, ultimately, we hope his new career.
2. I am thankful for the invention of the whole online college option. I finished my Master’s degree completely online. The Fab Hub has done online work already and is starting a new program now. This has been a perfect option for the way our lives work. I couldn’t imagine having to sit through two-hour graduate classes with an infant and the online option was the only way I finished my graduate degree. It just makes it so much more accessible.
3. I am thankful that the fruit fly infestation seems to be over. We’ve seen one or two every couple of days, but the massive outbreak seems to finally be under control.
4. I am thankful that we’ve found good homes for some of our CSA bounty. Some weeks, Mom and Super Sister don’t grab as much of a share of the CSA pickup and we just can’t handle the amount of veggies. We’re happy to share because wasting would be so very sad.
5. I am thankful that whatever germ decided to visit my body this week seems to be on its way out without much ado or a major knockdown illness. Here’s hoping I’m not speaking too soon.
6. I am thankful that it’s raining as I write this. I love rain in the fall. But at the moment, I am mostly thankful for the rain because nobody remembered to water the plants on the front porch today.
7. I am thankful that we got a spot on a nighttime hike this weekend. We were interested in the night hike, but found out about it pretty late and the reservation list was maxed out. We planned to find a Zilla-sitter for the evening and make a date night out of it. Once we found out we were on the waiting list, however, I figured it would never happen since we were so far down. But we got a call the other day and we’re in.
8. I am thankful that the Fab Hub doesn’t mind going on the nighttime hike without me. Given that I haven’t felt well this week, though, I know a hike after dark when the temperature is chilly isn’t the best choice for me. I don’t want him to miss it since it’s the last one of the season, though, so he’s going to go solo or see if one of his guys can join him.
9. I am thankful that there is leftover spiedie-marinated chicken in the refrigerator right now. It will make a perfect chicken salad sandwich for lunch tomorrow. I am also thankful that there is a mason jar of roasted green pepper soup in the refrigerator. That stuff is full of vitamin C and in post-sick-ish mode, that will be good for my immune system.
10. Speaking of immune systems, I am thankful for a good home remedy find on Pinterest. I usually make my infamous Sick Tea when I’m feeling under the weather, but last night I just did not feel like squeezing fresh lemons. Perfectly timed, I found a pin for a tea with ginger, cardamom, and honey. I happened to have all of those ingredients on hand and the tea took no time at all to make. Ginger has sinus-clearing properties, so I’ve read, and I had major sinus congestion so I gave it a try. After a huge steaming mug of that and lots of extra sleep last night, I have to say I feel pretty un-congested today. Coincidence or true remedy? Don’t know and don’t care. I’m going with the theory that it worked. If nothing else, it tasted great and was comforting.
Bonus item of thankfulness: Thanks to Tammy and to the Fab Hub for noticing that I had comments disabled on the post about the day Zilla and I spent doing nothing together. Comments are now enabled, so if you wanted to comment on that one, go for it!
Well, that’s a few of my items of thankful for the week. What are yours?

Glad that the germ is now leaving you and that you’ve found a home remedy on Pin too! To a great weekend and week ahead!
A good home remedy is always a good find. Thanks for coming by, Michelle!
Our “off week” is the one coming up. Conferences at school. I have so much to cram into this “off” week that it will feel more “on” than a normal week!
Glad you are feeling better. The fall rain peaked my nesting instinct big time. Pull out the afghan and light the fire. Look out couch, here I come!
Oh, me too! Fall is just my favorite time of year.
WHat is hubs taking in school? It sounds like it was more convenient for you but did you find it hard to stay self motivated schooling online? I worry I wont stay focused enough… Glad you are feeling better… gotta love tea and ginger! who cares why as long as something works.
He is taking classes toward IT certs. As for me taking online (and him in his last bunch) we loved it and found staying motivated much easier than sitting in a classroom tapping our feet, waiting for the clock to move. We both have ADD/ADHD and having the option to study and work at our optimal times was awesome. We were happier going at our own pace and that kept us both motivated and on task.
Ahhh glad you’re feeling better, and what a great way to use Pintrest 🙂 Glad you had all the ingredients.
The nighttime hike sounds fun, but I think you’re probably right to listen to your body and sit this one out. The idea of a Return of the Germ doesn’t bear thinking about.
Great news about Fab Hub’s course – I hope that his zeal and enthusiasm for it carry him all the way through and out the other side into the perfect role.
Thanks for sharing these, and well done for writing them even when you’ve had such an ‘off’ week 🙂
I love finding stuff on Pinterest. Bane of my existence in some ways, though…not enough time in the world to cook everything I’d like to. 🙂
He loved his night hike. They will start up again in the spring and I will definitely go along. This was a wise choice physically this time around.
I’m way impressed I got a list in this week – AND I finished it on Thursday and pre-scheduled it to post. Go me! That’s a record.
Pre-scheduled? HUGE congrats for that! You did very well indeed 🙂
So nice that the hikes will continue next year and you’ll be able to join in again 😀
And if you like Pintrest, head over to Beth Teilho’s blog (it’s the TToT link about drugs and sideboobs) and see her AWESOME Pintrest board. I promise you won’t regret it.
I’ll have to check it out.
On-line courses sound like an awesome way for some folks to go to school. I am afraid I don’t have enough self-discipline to do it, myself, though. (One of the many reasons I do not home school my kids.) I would be taking recess and snack breaks all the time and then I’d see a cobweb and need to get it and when I find the feather duster, I see the kitchen towels I forgot to put away and ooh- something shiny! Yeah, probably not for me.)
A nighttime hike sounds like so much fun (except for the skunk possibilities), but it’s probably wise that you stay home and self-medicate until you feel better.
As two ADD/ADHDers, we were both concerned about the prospect of online schooling for each of us. As it turned out, it was the best thing ever for both of us (he’s also done it before). It allowed us to work at the best times and lengths of time for us rather than being forced into the schedule of the school or the prof. Sure, there were assignment deadlines, but again, we could work at the best pace for us. I don’t think it’s for everyone, but it was good for us!
The night hike was really cool, according to the Hub and he said they saw no skunks. 🙂 There was an extended long-distance communication with a screech owl, but other than that, they didn’t actually encounter any wildlife. I definitely made a good choice to stay home and rest, but I’m looking forward to going in the spring.
I’m glad the bug was not too horrible and on its way out (knock on wood).
How wonderful that you and fab hub found a way to continue with your education. The internet is a wonderful thing.
Thanks for the shout out!
Love (and hate) the Internet. But yes, it definitely works for us education-wise. There is much to be said for (and missed about) the traditional classroom, but sometimes life gets in the way of, well, life, and something’s gotta give.
Anytime! 🙂
I’m glad online degrees are working for you. I have absolutely no idea how they work, but they seem to be very popular.
I’ve been fighting a bug all week, too, hoping and praying it wouldn’t settle in. So far, so good. *knock on wood*
A nighttime hike sounds like loads of fun. They should make for great “date nights” for the two of you come spring.
I think part of the reason they are so popular with people is that in some cases, it allows you the opportunity to fit school in when you might otherwise not be able to. If I had to take classes for two and a half hours a night after teaching all day when my daughter was an infant, it would never have happened. The online setup allowed me to work at my own pace, in the hours I had available, and it worked well for me. Sometimes it even lets you attend a school you might not otherwise consider. There were people in my online grad program from all over the country!
The night hikes will definitely be fun. Had to opt out of this one in the interest of rest and recovery. The Hub really enjoyed it though.
Glad you’re feeling better.
I have several friends who are also pursuing degrees online; what a great use of technology.
It really is a great example of how technology can be helpful.
I did online classes, too – they are a godsend.
I am jealous of your rain…it rarely rains here (L.A.) and I get very excited when it does! It’s so cozy 🙂
Rain is awesome, that’s true. I’m not sure I’d be happy in a place with no rain.
So glad you’re feeling better.
But I am reading this a little late, so hopefully you stayed healthy!!
Eh, more or less. Nothing a good long Thanksgiving break won’t cure. 🙂
