TToT – Disappearing Act
I know, I know.
I got everybody all excited about my big job move, promised I would explain in more detail what I’ll be doing next…and then completely – and unintentionally – disappeared from this space all week.
I felt sort of “eh” on Saturday afternoon last week. I figured I was just tired from our amusement park trip the day before. But the headache got worse, the chest congestion took hold and by Sunday morning, I had a nasty summer cold which felt like it could easily be convinced to become a full-blown sinus and upper respiratory infection.
And then I spent most of the week really sick. Highly inconvenient, given that we had a yard sale scheduled for this weekend and a whole lot of stuff to set up.
Despite the fact that I felt lousy all week, there are still many moments for which to be thankful…
For starters, I am quite thankful for my knowledge of home remedies and healing herbs. Making steady use of them this week helped me keep that cold at bay and prevent it from becoming a full-blown infection.
I am also so thankful for the relief that comes from drinking a mug or bowl of hot liquid. Even if it’s mostly a placebo, nothing feels quite as good as breathing in the vapors from a steaming bowl of chicken broth.
None of my home remedies would be possible without an abundant supply of fresh fruits and vegetables and herbs. I am glad we had plenty on hand to use. And I am always thankful that we have enough to eat and that we can easily provide our family with fresh produce because that is not true for far too many people. Even though I understand it academically, I am always sort of stunned when I think that there are places in the world – in this country – where fresh produce is not readily available. We are blessed beyond measure.
I am glad that between what we had on hand in our pantry and fridge, we were able to manage meals for Kidzilla and the Hub without much fuss on those nights I just wanted soup and crackers. I’m thankful, too, that the “what do you want to do about dinner” discussions were relatively painless.
I’m grateful that our yard sale went fairly well. The first day was a bit slow, but that’s perhaps to be expected on a Friday. Saturday was a lot slow because it rained all morning. But overall, we sold a few things – including the small sofa we were hoping to move – and it went well. We were all delighted when our last couple of the day bought the remaining box of baby and toddler books Kidzilla cleaned out. They were new grandparents and wanted to get the books for their grandson. His parents are both teachers who love to read to him – we could not have been more delighted to know that her books will have a good home where they will be appreciated by another family of readers.
We enjoyed an impromptu dinner on Friday evening with Aunt D. and Uncle D. (Kidzilla’s Godfather) at a favorite place. Mom joined us and we all had a great time.
Right now I’m headed out with Super Sister to do a desperate search for a swimsuit for our planned trip to the beach…hoping I’ll be thankful for a good find!
That’s it for me – I’m calling in the SBoR/BoSR on this one and being thankful that I actually got a list up and remembered to link it!

FRIST? FRIST!
Yay, you’re here! Sorry you’ve been sick. I hate being sick at all, but especially in the summer.I can’t imagine having a fever and being all stuffy right now, when it’s 100 degrees outside! Glad you’re feeling better. Did you make sick soup?
I love it when things I or my kids loved go to someone else who is going to love them just as much!
You are indeed FRIST!
I’m here and I’m feeling much better. At least it wasn’t 100 degrees here – it’s been sort of mild for late August. It was pretty muggy a few days this week though and I hate that more than anything. Humidity is not my friend – my RA hates it, never mind my head congestion. I made lazy girl’s sick soup – plain old broth laced with tons of garlic. I didn’t even bother with noodles. But it served the same purpose. I did make sick tea, though – that combo is killer for colds. Honey, lemon, and garlic – works every time!
And I am so thrilled that this family will love and enjoy Zilla’s books the way we did. I find it hard to let go of books, but we have SO many and these were really just too young for her.
AW! Bless your boots!! As Lizzi would say!!! 🙂 There is nothing worse than being sick in the summer… I really hope and pray you are recovering fast and I’m so glad you had a fairly successful sale! How sweet that those grandparents will have your sweetie’s books to read their grandchildren. PERFECT.
I hope you keep resting and healing up yourself, and I am anxious to hear more about the job too! *When you are feeling strong enough to share*
I just said that in my reply to Lizzi’s comment – summer colds are worse than winter ones, in my opinion. Blah.
It really is perfect that Zilla’s books went to someone who will love them so much – that makes me so happy!
I promise I’ll share more about the new work life this week. Tomorrow, though, we’re off to the beach!
(knock on wood) I have missed that particularly unpleasant part of the Summer season. Good to hear that you were able to rein it in enough not to totally disrupt your week!
Get well soon, as it’s almost Autumn (somehow!)
I did manage to keep it from becoming totally awful and that was huge. Autumn is indeed on the way, but I’m not quite ready to give up summer just yet. I’m going to hang on to this last week (unofficially) and enjoy the freedom. Once school starts, though, I’ll start thinking fall!
Awwwh I hope you’re all better now! I had a summer cold not long ago and it SUCKED. Bigtime. I had to go to bed and everything! Glad you’ve been able to take it a bit easy and medicate with herbs and drink soup and treat yourself gently.
Good luck with the swimsuit search. I find that kind of thing very stressful alone, so I hope that having your sister with you makes it all much more manageable.
Well done you for finding thankfuls. And hooray that the yard sale went well.
I think summer colds are worse than winter ones, truly.
I hate shopping alone for anything which is precisely why the Sister was there. It was so much better and we found some great things. I think her eye is much more forgiving than my own!
You have been keeping us in suspense, but this is a pretty good reason, I just wish it had been for something more fun. Yes, a bowl of chicken soup cures everything, or at least makes us believe! I’m sorry about your yard sale, the weather never fails to be uncooperative for such things, but sounds like you did ok in spite of it. We’ll be watching for that new career announcement soon! See you on the next round of WWF, you are keeping me on my toes! 🙂
I really didn’t mean to be suspenseful – I’ll make sure to get that up here when we get back to normal weekdays. Tomorrow, we’re headed for the beach for the day!
The sale was OK despite the rain and it helped move some stuff out of our garage!
I’ll catch up on my WWF after we get the beach stuff ready.
There you are! Sorry you’ve been feeling peaky. Glad you have your herbs and FabHub. Honestly, after your summer of activity and this big decision, it doesn’t sound that wild that you got sick. Your body broke down! Hope the swimsuit shopping wasn’t miserable! At least you got to take advantage of sales, right?
Yup, I’m still here. Feeling much better!
You know, I think that’s exactly what my body did. My BFF and I have always had a theory – you can push through and push through but when your body hits a long break or gets past a big stressor, then it just goes “OK, enough!” I think I got past the Hub starting his job and me leaving mine and my body said “OK, time to shut down!”
The swimsuit shopping was actually successful – found a cute bottom and a top that matched and even in my size. But. The top was HIDEOUS. So I just bought an athletic tank to go with the bottoms and that will work fine. Found two great maxi dresses, though. Way good sale – walked out with four items on huge clearance all for less than the cost of one of the items alone. Score!
Awesome shopping trip, good for you! I totally agree on our bodies breaking down after a high-stress period. We run on adrenalin and then when we finally can, we collapse. I hope that you will be feeling great for your beach time tomorrow… enjoy!!
We’re looking forward to it!
Ack, what a bummer to be sickly. All of my kids have had their first cold of the year, basically the minute they stepped into school it went through the schools and families like a wildfire. I am fighting it with all I have right now. Mom cannot get sick!
Glad your yard sale was successful. Moving the big stuff is grand, and seeing sentimental things go to good homes is icing on the cake.
Nothing quite like getting back in the school buildings and sharing all the germs! You’re right – the Mom can’t go down! Try my sick tea – honey, lemon, garlic, and water. Sounds awful, I know, but it works. Zilla actually loves it – asks for it when she’s sick.
Oh, I’m sorry that you caught the crud! I hope you are feeling better soon. It’s hard enough to just do the normal stuff when feeling sick, but to pull off a garage sale while feeling under the weather is quite a feat.
Feeling much better than I was, Kristi! The first half of the week was rough – slept a lot. Perhaps being able to do that helped kick it out. And I have to be totally honest – the Fab Hub really did all the hard part of the sale. He did the lifting and moving and most of the organizing. And he definitely did all of the cleanup!
Hope you are feeling much better! I think summer colds are the worst. Glad your books found a great home, that always makes it a bit easier to let go of them. Still can’t wait to hear about your new adventure.
Thanks, Jean. Don’t know what it is about summer colds, but they are definitely worse.
Even if you want o clean out and give things away, there is still a bit of sentiment attached to your “stuff” and memories, of course. So knowing someone is going to appreciate it is great.
I’ll get that new job info in this week, promise!
So pleased to read that you’re feeling better. Summer colds are the worst. It’s like we expect them in the winter but the summer heat just makes feeling badly worse!! And WOW to the awesome garage sale. I so know what you mean about being pleased that your used treasures are actually going to somebody who appreciates them – in the case of the grandparents buying Kidzilla’s old books. AWESOME!!
The hot liquid cold thing – I swear by this – hot hot tea with cayenne pepper, honey, and whiskey. Seriously, it’s like a miracle cure.
You use the tea with pepper, honey, and whiskey, too???? I use that all the time. The cayenne pepper is magic. I also have a cough remedy made from honey, lemon, and cayenne that works magic. There may be something else in there, but those are the big three that I remember. I pull that recipe out at the first sign of someone’s cough and knock it out.
Which of the home remedies works the best for you. I’m a firm believer in chicken soup but always interested to learn more. M
I swear by the “Spanish cure” – tea made from honey, lemon, and garlic. Bring three cups of water and three cloves of garlic (cut in half) to a boil. Turn off the heat and add half cup of honey and half cup of fresh lemon juice. Sip 1/2 cup throughout the day. I use it at the first sign of a cold to prevent development, but I’ve also used it when one hit me full force and it knocks it right out of you.
Summer colds are the pits, but I find a silver lining in the care part. Taking time to heat up broth and gather the special ingredients. I put more thought and yes, care into the little home remedies when someone here has a bug than I do in the busy day to day normal. Feels like love to me and I do derive a little pleasure from that.
I agree, May. There is something satisfying in the feeling that you’ve made the home remedy by hand to help soothe someone’s ills.
