TToT – Birthdays and Life
Some days make you stop and think about life more than others.
Today is one of those days.
Our Daughter is seven years old today and I have spent a great deal of time this week, and especially today, thinking about how we came to be in this moment…
I’m going to try to do it here without crying too much.
I am thankful, first and foremost, that we are both here – alive and together. To say that Zilla’s birth did not go as planned is a gross understatement. Suffice to say that for a time that night, the Fab Hub (and now Fab Dad) was not certain whether he would leave that hospital with a family or without one. Through the grace of God we are here, together, a family. So we celebrate not only her birthday, but the birth of our family…
I am thankful that through Zilla’s difficult birth and the immediate aftermath, my Father-in-Law was there for us. As a physician, his presence and guidance was comforting. That was crucial for all of us when things got scary. I am thankful for his sage advice in the days and weeks afterward; it has ensured our continued well-being as a family.
I am thankful for the Fab Hub’s Mom. She was there, too, worrying and waiting with all the rest. I am thankful that she kept my Mom company and gave her things to talk about and think about.
I am thankful for my Mom. Of course she would be present at the birth of our child. Knowing she was there, as she always has been, was so important in so many ways. I am thankful for her calm exterior, even when her internal demeanor might be anything but. I am thankful that she was right beside me the second I opened my eyes in recovery. I am thankful for every moment that she is part of our lives and for the example of motherhood she provides every day.
I am thankful for my Sister and for her humor. Of course she was present and concerned just like everyone else. But her ability to find humor and use it to ease the tension is a gift. I am thankful for her presence in the days after Zilla’s birth and for so many days ever since that she is part of our lives.
I am thankful for how Zilla has changed me – changed both of us. So much of who I am and who my Husband is today is because of this beautiful little creature who has graced our lives.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ZILLA! HAVE A BLAST AT THE PARTY! SAVE ME SOME CAKE!
WAIT! NO WAY! FRIST!!!!!
YES FRIST!
We have cupcakes here! With should’ve been blue but kind of turned out gray shark-colored icing.
“Gray icing…I can’t even think how to make gray icing.” Now I know. 😀
Family is always important and something that we should give thanks for……and we’re thankful for you, Lisa.
That is true, Michelle. And thank you – that was a sweet thing to say! <3
This IS a beautiful post. And having the important people around you during a difficult birth and thanking them is wonderful. I like the way you say Zilla’s birth was the birth of your family. My eldest is turning 30 in September and I’m going to remember to think of that on his special day. Hope the party is fantastic. All those pink balloons. 🙂
Thanks, Val. I really do think of it that way. Everything changed in so many ways that day.
The party – and the after-party – was awesome! The balloons have moved to the living room so we’re all enjoying them!
Happy birthday, Zilla! and happy gave birth and survived day to you. Sounds like a frightening day, but I’m glad you had everyone there to support you.
Have a great time at that party!
Frightening was a good word, Christine, but all we know now is how blessed and happy we are! We had a great time partying!
Happy Birthday, you little wonder! How fortunate you are to have such a loving family.
Thank you, Sarah. <3
What a beautifully written post. Happy Birthday to your family! I really can’t wait to read all about the birthday celebration. Hope you have a fun weekend.
I guess I will have to do a post-party post! 😀
This is a perfectly beautiful post to follow up the other perfectly beautiful post that you wrote earlier this week, Lisa! Sweet Tea was completely awesome – as is this gorgeous post! The amazing people in our lives that so many of us are blessed enough to call “family” – they are certainly blessings and worthy of our thankfulness. Your sister sounds a lot like one of mine – always finds the humor in things. Her one-liners have always given me smiles – even in the worst of times. And your mom – she sounds a lot like mine was as well. Calm and supportive on the outside, regardless of what was going on in her mind and heart. Happy Birthday Zilla and to you and all of her wonderful family! A wonderful day to celebrate indeed! 🙂
Thanks for all of your wonderfully sweet words, Marcia. I guess I’ve been having a pretty hefty thinking and feeling week! 🙂 Family is important and we had a great time celebrating!
Happy birthday to Zilla! I’m glad everything worked out.
Thanks, Kristi! We are, too!
This is so beautiful. Celebrating not only a beautiful and vibrant soul, but the birth and union of a family.
Happy birthday Zilla xoxo
Thank you, Kimberly!
Happy Happy Birthday to you all! I hope it was an amazing celebration! <3
It was amazing, Christina! Thank you!
Happy Birthday Zilla! I hope her day was as special as she is. I have also been blessed with an incredible (miracle) turn out of a tough beginning so yeah, this got me right in the feels. Than goodness you both made it – you’re two tough broads.
Thanks, Jen. Yeah, I know you get that part of it. I’ve been having a lot of feels this week for sure!
Ha – two tough broads – love that! 😀
Ohhh I hope you had the most glorious, wonderful shark-party EVER, and I’m so glad for how beautifully Zilla’s changed your life and made your family so wonderful. And I love that your writing reflects how deeply that runs.
Thank you, Lizzi. The party was absolutely “jawsome,” as Zilla has been saying. The party – and all the rest – has been wonderful.
Happy Belated Birthday wishes for your daughter! Those balloons look amazing.
Thank you, Vanessa! I think we enjoy the balloons as much as Zilla does!
Happy Birthday to Miss Zilla! 7 is awesome, says Lily 🙂 I am glad Fab Dad got to leave the hospital with a family! And that you got to celebrate 7 years of this family now. Hope the party went well 🙂 Enjoy your week, Lisa!
Thanks, Stephanie! And thanks to Lily for the wisdom! 😉 Party was awesome…seven years of family has been, too!

(as is my custom I will leave you with the Beatles):
Thank you for the birthday wishes, Clark! And great video, of course! Zilla thought it was great.
I hope Zilla had a sharkalicious birthday! I’m so glad Fab Hub became Fab Hub/Fab Dad. I had one of those scary delivery things with Emma (me, not her), so I understand.
Sharkalicious – definitely! We shark-partied all weekend. 🙂
