TToT – Long Weekends
Here we are at the weekend again and, as is usual of late, it’s nearly over before I get my TToT in.
It’s a fine thing, I suppose, because the only reason for my tardiness is that we’re out living, doing, and enjoying this very long weekend – five days for us. That’s not even a weekend; it’s nearly a week! Thanks to the lack of snow around here this year, Zilla’s school decided to tack an unused snow day on to an already long Memorial Day weekend. No argument here; it has provided the opportunity for staying up late, sleeping in, watching movies, taking a day trip or two, goofing around, getting some chores done (OK, maybe less of that than the goofing around, but whatever), and just taking a breath before we head into the last two weeks of school.
So before we head out on today’s adventure, let’s get on with the thankfuls…
I’m thankful, first and foremost, for this very long weekend to spend with Zilla and the Hub. It’s not that we don’t spend time together regularly, but having this extended weekend break offers opportunity for a much slower pace, no alarm clocks, and no commitments.
Zilla and I have been working on some projects which are now finally finished. It feels good to check off a big chore and we can now say we checked off two!
Smoothies. I fell out of my smoothie habit for a while, but I’m back to it and I feel great. Zilla really enjoys them also, which I love. And I still think it’s a great way to make sure fruits and vegetables don’t get wasted. Nobody likes the stuff that is starting to look a little sad, but in a smoothie? No problem. No waste. Happy mom.
The family of robins who live in our tree each year are back and so is the pair of doves who make their next above our neighbor’s front door. It’s exciting to watch them tend their nests and eventually see the baby birds emerge. No good photos yet, but I’m sure we’ll get some.
I’d like to say I’m glad spring showed up, but it kind of never did. We had a whole lot of cool and rainy followed immediately by the nasty hot and humid weather. So it kind of feels like we missed out on warm sunny spring days. But if we spend our time and energy bemoaning what we do not have or experience, we miss out on that which we do have. Rainy days are beautiful in their own right and provide much needed water so that the world might grow. It’s kind of like tears…tears are cleansing, necessary sometimes to wash away sadness and help us move to the next thing.
This week I am thankful for our public library. I always love the library and we really try to take advantage of the programs they offer. This week I’m happy to have found a movie I wanted to watch that I couldn’t rent anywhere else. It was on TV late one night and I fell asleep before the end, so I wanted to finish it. Our library came through and I got to watch it. You never know what treasures lurk in the library – make sure to visit yours!
I’m glad my family has finally dragged themselves out of bed this morning. I have no idea why these two were so sleepy today, but since we decided to postpone today’s day trip, I didn’t set any alarms. They both slept much later than any of us ever do. I guess they needed it, but I’m glad they’re now up and about and we can get on with the rest of the day.
I’m grateful, of course, for the men and women who have served our country in times of war and peace to keep us all safe.
I am so happy to see my daughter loving and growing in her faith. This little girl is such a beautiful example of how Christ shines through each of us. I love to see how much she loves receiving Sacraments and participating at Mass, and so much more. And I have to admit that it adds a deeper level to my own faith and participation, definitely.
I am, of course, thankful for my Hub and all he does for us. He works hard, takes care of things around the house, cleans up a vast majority of cat messes, and lets us know how much he loves us. And coffee. He makes the best coffee, which should be hitting my cup any second now…
These two…my life.
I’m calling that a list and getting out of here – lots of living to do.

I want a hammock so bad, or a lounge or whatever – just something to lay on outside with a book. We seem to have bypassed spring here as well. Such is life I guess.
As great as that hammock looks, I think I would have to go for a lounge chair. Somehow I see myself flipping right out of the hammock and onto the ground, not so gracefully! Of course, then I might just stay on the ground and read…that works, too.
Enjoy your long break and time with your family. We always get a variety of seasonal days just never in any logical order. It is absolutely a summer, not spring day today. Yesterday we had spring and so much rain all last week. I’m happy for a hot, summer day today. Must have been a sleeping in kind of day, I’m certainly thankful for days to do that. (I did that today as well. It was much needed!). Hope you have a wonderful weekend.
Thank you, Jean. We’ve been having a wonderful extended weekend together. There is absolutely no rhyme or reason to the way the weather develops anymore, it seems. I think the universe is confused. 😀 Hope you enjoyed the summer weather after all the rain!
There is nothing nicer than not jumping to the sound of alarm clocks or rushing out the door to various scheduled events. We too are enjoying the “ahhhh” of the long weekend, staying up late, sleeping in late, eating when we please, and relaxing to the max. I hope the three of you continue to have a wonderful weekend together, sometimes the happiest moments occur when just going with the flow!
You’re absolutely right, Josie, about just taking life as it comes. We’ve done a lot of that these last few days. For some reason, though, even though I like the sleeping late I get angry with myself when I do. No idea why. 😀 One more day of doing just what we like tomorrow, then it’s back to school for the last two weeks. Come on summer break! We’re ready!
HOW LATE DO YOU PEOPLE GO TO SCHOOL? We’ve been out since May 11, which is ridiculously early. There needs to be a happy medium.
Love that Zilla is enjoying her walk with Christ. I think that’s a real advantage of being Catholic and having specific milestones to reach, like first communion. Methodists are more casual about it all. Such a sweet picture of her with the flags!
There was a nest of baby robins on the preschool playground. They were in a crook in a gigantic sweet gum tree, about eight feet off the ground. The kids could see mama flying in with worms in her mouth for her babies, but they were safely out of reach.
Hammocks – ahhhh!
This year we finish on June 14th. I suppose the next question is how early do your kids start? We go back the week before Labor Day now (used to be just after). I agree there should be a happy medium – the start and end times are so disparate across the U.S. This is a crazy country.
Zilla is just so full of life and love and light right now. True, she drives me insane most days but at the same time she is just truly a sweet and kind and generous little girl who really is doing her absolute best every day.
The cool thing about our robins is that their nest is at the perfect height in the tree for us to look at them from our second floor window, which is actually the main living floor. So cool.
We usually start two weeks before Labor Day – too early!
Definitely too early. I still think old school – school should start after Labor Day. Period. But that’s just me.
I love libraries. I discovered a writing group at mine.
🙂
They are treasures. I love any building full of books.
Aw, doves and robins.
Hope you enjoyed your day.
Our library also has a writing group, Kerry, but I don’t know that it’s a good fit for me – it’s specifically targeting memoirs and I’m not writing one.
We had a great day – lots of good sales on the items we needed (even if I forgot to use the additional discount coupons) and Zilla and I have new shoes!
I agree that observing others develop faith helps to deepen one’s own.
That photo of the hammock near the river is so inviting!
I’ve always found that to be true, Kristi. And I find it amazing that children have so much.
That hammock looks so lovely…too bad it isn’t mine!
Awwwwh I finished this post with a massive MASSIVE grin on my face, Lisa. SO happy for you and all your wonderful LIVING, and all the very many good things going on in your life. HOORAY for the library – I’ve recently rediscovered the delight that is as-many-good-books-as-you-want-for-free. I can’t believe I forgot how good it is!
HOORAY for smoothies and great outlooks and the wonderfulness of a 5 day weekend. Well played with that snow day, Zilla! 😀
That’s exactly how I feel about the library – for years I just…didn’t. When Zilla got old enough to read and we signed her up for summer reading program, I was reminded how cool the public library is.
That extra snow day was awesome. It allowed us to take off for the amusement park on a weekday because Zilla and the Hub were both off. So cool (well, the weather was hot…)!
Happy is a great word for how I’ve been feeling lately. It’s a nice change from all the other words that have been so present the last few years. I’m still nervous about many things, but I am determined to keep this momentum going and get on a really solid path of forward motion.
Smoothies are amazing – healthy and a great way to use the abundance of rapidly-deteriorating fruit in my fridge! 😀
