About a Christmas List
The other night as I supervised Zilla’s bath time routine, we chatted about all things Christmas. At some point, the conversation turned to Santa. I realized that with a mere week until Christmas, my child had not really talked much about Christmas presents.
Me: Zilla…
Z: Yes, Mom?
Me: Zilla, did you write a letter to Santa Claus?
Z: No, not yet.
Me: Hmm. It’s getting pretty close to Christmas. Is there anything you would like Santa to bring you for a Christmas present?
Z: That salad set I saw in the store that goes with my tea set.
(This is indeed a toy salad bowl set that is made by Green Toys – the same company that made her very first tea set. Check them out – they’re eco-friendly kid toys.)
Me: Anything else?
Z: Yes. Red ponytails. I definitely need some because all of mine are lost somewhere.
Me: OK, that’s a smart idea. I’m sure Santa can figure out red ponytails. Would you like Santa to bring you anything else for Christmas?
Z: No, but I know what Santa could bring you for Christmas.
(heart melted a little here)
Me: What’s that, Zilla?
Z: Santa could bring you a whole lot of shower puffs so when they fall apart, Dadda doesn’t have to go out and buy you more all the time.
I had to laugh out loud at my clever little girl’s request for Santa. And I had to smile that not only were Zilla’s own requests simple, but she immediately thought of something for the rest of us – a year’s supply of shower puffs for me and fewer Target runs for the Fab Hub to replace my demolished shower puffs.
I spent a few minutes later that evening wondering what the Fab Hub and I had done wrong that we have a child who isn’t writing a list as long as her arm of things she wants. It seemed out of the ordinary. But after a little more thought, I realized that it must be something we’re doing right.
Love your sweet Zilla. Every family needs one.
Yeah, we like her. We’ll probably keep her. 🙂
You are most certainly doing lots of things right. Keep it up.
Thanks, Christine – I sure hope so!
Yes, you are definitely doing something right! How sweet.
Yeah, she’s a whole lot of sweet. Thanks, Kitch!
Yes, you re doing things right! At least, I think you are because Maggie is similarly stumped by the idea of a Christmas list. And I want to think we’re doing it right, too. I’m already out of town and celebrating it up. I have one more post up my sleeve, but the I’ll probably start my blog hibernation. Have a wonderful holiday!
I’m going with the vote that we’re both doing it right! Have a wonderful holiday! 🙂
How sweet of your daughter to be thinking of others. And what simple requests she had.
I agree with the other commenters: You are definitely doing something right!
She has always been a very grateful child. And she’s far from perfect, but I was really happy to see that she was not focused on the stuff and the getting. Thanks, Tammy!
When my son came home last Friday he could not wait to tell me how appalled he was at his roommate’s Christmas list and his nerve in calling up his little ol’ grandma to tell her what he wanted from her. Will said it was the first time he realized that he had never asked for anything for Christmas–true story. I listen throughout the year and pick up things I hear him talking about. For him half the Christmas fun has always been the surprise of finding out what I came up with. He is so, so easy to please, but still it made my day when he told me–“and I am never disappointed!” I feel like I’ve already had my Christmas gift!
Oh, you definitely did, May! What a terrific young man you have raised. It really is appalling to hear how much and how blatantly kids (and adults) put in requests for gifts. I hope Zilla stays on the simple side of things and is just thrilled to be home spending time together baking cookies and listening to Christmas music. Have a very happy and blessed Christmas, May!
Aww…what a sweetie! No, you and husband have done a fine job… not anything wrong about this! 🙂
Exactly. It’s kind of like when we sigh and tell Zilla to stop eating fruits and vegetables and eat something else. Not really a problem at all!
