Conversations with Kidzilla – Beer and Books
I love listening to my daughter talk.
OK, that’s not always true. Sometimes Kidzilla starts speaking the moment her eyes open in the morning and she doesn’t stop until her eyes close again at night. And even then, sometimes she keeps right on going. On those days, it’s a bit much sensory input for my ADHD.
But in general, I do love to listen to her. She’s smart and she’s funny and she always surprises me with the things she knows – like when she identified a black-tipped reef shark in a tweet that went by on my screen.
Sometimes we have interesting conversations while we’re doing her homework in the afternoon. One such day, I was helping with some spelling words.
Me: Zilla, that’s not a “D,” it’s a “B.”
Z: So I wrote beer?
Me: Well, not really. You meant to write deer, but you got your letter backwards. So it says “beer,” but that’s not what you were trying to write.
Z: Ah. Next time I go to the library, when I get a book about beer, I’ll be all set and Dad will love it.
(Yes, please tell the teacher that…)
Me: You’d better not get a book about beer from the school library.
Z: Why not?
Me: Well, first of all, I don’t think the school library has books about beer.
Z: You don’t know.
Me: I know. And second of all, beer is for grownups.
Z: Well, maybe I’ll get a book called Feast of Beer for Grownups.
And this is why I feel compelled to volunteer in the school library.
Ahaaha! Even our kids sound alike! Cheeky little things 🙂
Aren’t they? I love it! Wonder where mine gets that smart-assy thing…
I LOVE Feast of Beer for Grownups. I have several brewer friends who enjoy such a book. She’s got a good idea. 🙂
My Husband said, “why that title?” No idea…that’s just what popped into her little head and out of her mouth! Sounded like a catchy one to me, too!
I want a feast of beer for grown-ups!
As do I! Although I did find the last box of my current favorite at the store yesterday. Win.
Wow! Very progressive school! Ive decided she really needs her own show!
Then she can support her parents in their old age!
I seriously laughed out loud. Not jus the nod to the LOL but a f’real noise out loud. So so funny!! My favorite “you don’t know” – she’s awesome. So during your volunteer quest, were there books on beer in the library? 😉
I have yet to locate any.
She’s bonkers, and some kind of wonderful!
Niece and Neff are a bit precocious, too, but in a very much smaller way. My mum (a gardener) has been teaching them latin; they can both say AND IDENTIFY metasequoia glyptostrobides. I can’t!
Haha – yes, she’s a bit bonkers. I think you two will enjoy meeting when you get over here. Latin in the garden? That’s impressive! I know what daisies are…
The closing line caused a rather large, unladylike outburst on this end! Sounds like self-defense to me!
I figure if I can get a small glimpse of what she’s getting into, I can be prepared when the inevitable note comes home! It is indeed self-defense. 😀
Ah, Lisa, and I understand the compulsion! 😉
🙂
I’m with Kristi. Best line: “You don’t know.”
And the delivery was impeccable. Sassy, that girl.
I can just see her going up to the librarian and asking, “Hey, got any books about beer?” Ha!
Yup, these are the nightmares I have.
HA! I remember Cassidy’s pre-school teacher telling me about one kid who told her that his “daddy passed out from beer, and then mommy painted his toe nails to trick him.” Her motto she told the parents? “You believe half of what you hear, and I’ll believe half of what I hear!”
I think that rule should live through every grade… 🙂
That is probably a very good rule. 😀
I use that rule in preschool, too, but it doesn’t stop me from gently probing the kiddos for information when they come in with a “good” story! I’m so baaaad!
Probably good that my kid is not in your class, then. 😀
hahaha, kids really do say the funniest things. My niece comes out with some hilarious things.
The best part, Dannii, is that they usually have no idea that they’re funny – or why. That’s the best part for me!
That’s funny. It reminds me of conversations I have with some of the kids I teach. In one kid’s writing, he described getting dizzy like “if he had drank a million beers”. I had to laugh a little and ask him about it. Apparently his dad told him to write it. Very funny.
See what fun you have to look forward to?
Well, at least it came from the dad and not from any firsthand knowledge on the part of the kid! 😀
lol. I mean really, I laughed out loud. Volunteer indeed. I’m glad you are writing these funny conversations down. A treasure to look back upon.
Val, the Hub and I laughed so hard we couldn’t breathe when I posted this yesterday – even having experienced it firsthand, it is just so funny in the retelling. She is just hilarious. We promised ourselves long ago we’d record these because they really are priceless. And I have another one ready to go for a future post already! She’s on fire lately. 😀
[…] A year ago, I told a story of my Grandparents and every day love and what that means to me. Two years ago, I told the story of their romance. My blog posts in the last two Februarys have covered topics like worrying about my Daughter (I still do that), the Rotten Cats and their birthday celebrations, and observing the bizarre and mundane in life. We still have three cats. They are still rotten, especially the big one. I still write about things that are mundane and bizarre. Or just funny. […]
