Once Upon a Year or Two Ago
Sometimes it’s nice to take a look at where we’ve been.
Every now and then I take a look through photo albums, old letters, piles of filing in my office that need to be handled…but I haven’t done much backward observation here on my blog. Today’s as good a day as any, so come along with me and let’s visit the ghosts of blog posts past…
A year ago, it was cold. Really cold. Remember that Polar Vortex thing? I have a few posts in there about snow days and the cold temps and how I’d really like it to be spring. There were a lot of snow days. It’s February. It’s cold. There is snow. I’m ready for spring. That much is to be expected. I do not enjoy winter, except in its beauty…from inside my house.
Last February I was posting my Soup of the Week recipes pretty regularly – cream of mushroom, hearty tomato lentil – and I still do that. Recently we’ve had creamy spiced cauliflower soup and just tonight a creamy tomato with veggie ABC letters.
And food – I have some fun recipes in there like the Hub’s homemade pizza and the impromptu German fest I crafted completely from items in my fridge one night. Funny…in that post, I had a head of red cabbage left from our fall CSA. And now? Same. Why is there always so much cabbage??? Two years ago in February, I wasn’t doing much with food or soup, but I did tell a tale of the Sunday Dinners of my childhood.
My One Word for both 2013 and 2014 was Focus. I was working on that. This year my word is Progress. I’ll be honest here and say I haven’t made much of that so far. Mental note to self: get on that.
A year ago, I told a story of my Grandparents and every day love and what that means to me. Two years ago, I told the story of their romance. My blog posts in the last two Februarys have covered topics like worrying about my Daughter (I still do that), the Rotten Cats and their birthday celebrations, and observing the bizarre and mundane in life. We still have three cats. They are still rotten, especially the big one. I still write about things that are mundane and bizarre. Or just funny.
In 2013 and 2014 I wrote a lot about my Fab Hub and my Kidzilla and that is still true today. One or both of them makes it into pretty much every one of my posts. I spent many of my blog posts of the past coping with my Hub’s job loss and working through all of the fallout that ensued. I wrote about wanting to leave my job and go a different route, on my own terms. Today the Hub is happily employed in a new field and I have quit that job to work for myself. Life is good.
I was doing a bit of Five Friday Favorites then and I’ve brought back the Friday Five again this year in a slightly different format. Somewhere between February of 2013 and February of 2014, I started to participate in the Ten Things of Thankful link-up started by Miss Lizzi of Considerings. In fact, I was first encouraged to give it a try by someone I met through Mama Kat’s Writer’s Workshop – Dyanne of Backsies is What There is Not. I think those posts cover just about every topic possible. And I know for certain that writing those posts and connecting with so many wonderful people is what brought me through some very dark days.
So that’s me…that’s what was spilling out of my head and onto the screen a year and two years ago. It’s been a wild ride. Some things have changed dramatically; others have remained very much the same. But the one thing I can say for certain is that it has all been for the best.
Your turn: What were you blogging about at this time in previous years? What has changed? What is still the same? Tell us in the comments or link up with Kat!

I was just looking through both of my old blogs yesterday too! Now im going back to read a couple of yours. I got a thing for ZILLA…your grandparents and the rotten cats! I probably gonna have to come back a couple times! See ya!.. oh and the TTot thing…SOOOOO true. So happy to have met people like you there!
Ah, yay! I threw those links in there hoping new (or old) readers would take a peek at some older stuff. I love finding older things on TToT blogs when somebody links to them. I think you’ll like some of what’s there. I can think of others you would probably enjoy that aren’t linked in that post, too.
The TToT is huge for me. Huge. And CRAP I need to write that!
A look back is a great idea. I’m looking forward to read about the bizarre and the mundane. And chances are, if you are still blogging in the future, you’ll be writing about Zilla’s achievements, tribulations and rebellion as the time goes on. So glad we connected through Jen and TTOT.
I kind of enjoyed the look back…it’s easy to forget what you’ve posted. Stick around here long enough and you’ll get plenty of bizarre and mundane! I do hope to be writing one day about all the great things Zilla has done.
Yes, very glad we connected, too! Even if you do kill me at WWF pretty much every time… 😉
It is good to look back every once in a while because it helps you look forward.
Great post!
Thanks, Tinne. And you are so right – that is a great way to look at it. Love that!
I need to do this. Here or there, I do because when I’m writing a post, I’ll think – oh! I’ve written about something similar, let me link to it but I haven’t done an in-depth look.
Some of those recipes look divine! I may have to try a few of them 😉
I like to link to other posts, too, Jen. The digging for them takes a bit of time, though, so if I don’t really remember it, I get kind of lost. But I loved Kat’s prompt because it really gave me a chance to look at a lot of the old stuff. And it gives readers a chance to connect with other things, too.
Have fun with the recipes – let me know how you like them if you try any! I love to hear how recipes turn out for other cooks.
I think I was tyring to figure out how to use my blog as an author’s platform. Still working out the details on that one!
Glad I’m not the only one not quite sure what to do with all my spaces!
It makes me happy that I don’t have to click on these links to remember these posts. I’m glad we’ve built a friendship through this weird, modern method.
That is really sweet. And unbelievable, too. Has it really been that long? Wow. And I am also glad. 🙂
I heart you. That is all.
I heart you, too. 🙂
This is my first visit to your blog (via Mama Kat). It’s a great way to get to know you through your old posts. Now I don’t have time to read them all, but I’ll definitely check out some. Oh and those soups sound delicious. I’m normally not a fan of most soups, but some I do like.
Hi, Astrid, and welcome! Yes posts like this are a great way top get top know the blog and the writer better. Take a look around and do come back again! I’ll pop over to read you when I’m feeling a bit better.
