Six Sentence Stories – Aged
It was never supposed to be permanent; the separation loomed large but would only be temporary.
“I’ll be back,” he assured her, the tears welling in his eyes threatening to mirror the flow of the ones already streaming down her own face. “The waiting might feel forever, but we’ll be together again and then it will be forever.”
She wanted to believe him – she did believe him – yet somehow, when he slung his duffel over his shoulder and walked down the porch stairs, she knew…
Now, so many years later, she sat in her rocking chair on that same porch, hands shriveled like drying grapes, but with a heart still as rich and full as a well-aged wine, waiting for him to come up those same stairs. “Yes,” she whispered to the air, “we will be together again very soon and then it will be forever…”

Ouch! So evocative…
The original ending I had in mind was an even bigger ouch – I just ended up liking this ending better.
Evocative, eh? I think I like that.
YES! Evocative. What was the bigger ouch?
Originally I was going to have it turn out that he intentionally left her and went off to live his life without her. But I didn’t like him being a stinker, so I went with this. Also, I was cooking with grapes. 😀
What I love most about this tender story is the truth of both the beginning and the end. They believed that they were meant to be together and would be, and in the final end they shall. Sometimes love means waiting a very long time, but makes it worth it. Beautifully done, Lisa!
Thank you, Josie. I hadn’t intended that ending when I started, but that’s where it went. I kind of said “ooh, that would be better…” And so that’s what happened.
“…tears welling in his eyes threatening to mirror the flow of the ones already streaming down her own face.”
damn! what a great line/imagery
great Six Sentence Story
Whoo hoo – I got a “great line” comment from Clark – that’s awesome!!! Thanks!
What a poignant but beautiful tale of enduring love despite the sadness.
That’s a good thing, though, isn’t it, Old Egg? She hung on, despite. But yeah…sad.
Touched my heart.
