Soup of the Week – Matzah Ball Redux
Hello, friends!
Happy Easter, Happy Passover, and/or Happy Spring to all of you!
While Zilla and I are celebrating Easter Week, this week is also Passover for the Fab Hub. I’m working on a traditional Passover favorite – matzah ball soup.
I’ve shared this on the blog before, so I’m going to direct you to that post. As my Mother-in-Law often says, there are as many ways to make this soup as there are cooks who make it. That’s true of many recipes. This is the way I usually do it.
Here you go:
Soup of the Week – Matzah Ball Soup (Original)
There is nothing quite like a good bowl of matzah ball soup during Passover week. And with five days of rain in the forecast for the remainder of this week, today’s as good a day as any to put up a pot of soup.
One of the challenges of good matzah balls soup is, well, good balls. Check out this list of 10 Tips for the Best Matzah Ball Soup Ever from Amy Kritzer of What Jew Wanna Eat. Amy’s blog is one of the first I ever read and I have been in love ever since. Amy is smart and funny and her recipes are great modern updates for traditional Jewish foods. You’ll love Amy’s list of soup tips and there’s a bonus! In her post you’ll find a link to her 10 Tips for Matzah Ball Success over at The Jewish Week.
We may give a new recipe a try, too – again, one of Amy’s recipes. Check out Power Greens Matzo Ball Soup. This looks awesome. We already know we love green soup, so this looks like a perfect match.
Your turn: What are your favorite holiday foods? Do you make traditional family recipes? Updated ones? A combination? Is there a holiday food you just can’t stand? Share in the comments!
I love any kind of soup. I only had matzah ball soup once and it was yummy. We do sausage bread as a Christmas tradition. It is special once a year. Hope you enjoyed the holiday break with your family.
Sausage bread…never heard of that one! I’ll have to look it up. The break was nice. Kinda didn’t want to return.
I’m not much of a turkey person, and that pops up a lot. Now, I’ve found that if it’s brined it’s far more palatable, but still…not really my thing. Easter fav is deviled eggs. Love those little suckers. Xmas it’s my family’s ancient ravioli recipe–an entire day-long undertaking for a good crowd of people. But delicious.
I’ve never in my llfe made matzoh ball soup, and I should! I need to check out that blog. Brian would be so pleased!
We aren’t huge turkey people here, either. Turkey is so…meh. I make a wicked deviled egg – like mine are legendary and disappear in minutes. I think this Easter Sunday’s brunch was a record for how fast the plates were emptied. I also do variations like guacamole deviled eggs and red beet & horseradish deviled eggs. Also well-received.
Matzah ball soup is easy. And delicious. Do check out Amy’s blog – it’s really great. I fell in love way back when I first started looking at food blogs and have been a loyal fan there ever since.
The biggest traditional food in my family comes around each Thanksgiving. It is my mom’s oyster dressing. I didn’t appreciate it nearly as much when she was still alive as I do now.
There is something about those family recipes that transport us, isn’t there? I never thought too hard about my Grandmother’s recipes while she was the one here and making them. But now…different. It made me so happy when family came for Easter lunch and said the house smelled just like hers did on a Sunday afternoon. Perfect!
You put lots of carrots in your soup like I do! I’m not familiar with Amy’s site, but I will have to check it out. Stay dry this week, Lisa!
Dana, we do lots of carrots, yes! I think you’ll love Amy’s site.
Stay dry…yeah, seriously. Raining now and no sun in sight in the forecast…
