This Summer…
This summer is going to be different…
This summer I will spend some time on a bit of the usual. I will clean out closets, scrub under the stove burners and above the kitchen cabinets, and think about having a garage sale.
But this summer will also be different…
I will do those usual things, but I will also spend more time reading the books I have piled high for so long. I will make time for what is important to me. I will listen to music and look at art and learn something new.
I will exercise more. I will continue to eat good and healthy foods. I will nurture my body, my mind, and my spirit. I need to be strong for the rest of my life’s journey.
I will sleep more. I will set a bedtime and a waking time and stick to it. The benefits of a good night’s sleep are far-reaching. I will take naps. I will sleep with the windows open at night while crickets chirp and by a window on a cool rainy day. I will sleep in the sunshine and in the coolness of an afternoon indoors on much-too-hot-for-anything days.
I will watch movies in the local park at night. I will teach my Daughter the joy of having ice cream for dinner on a steamy summer evening. I will watch fireworks, both up close and from far away. I will watch the sun rise and set and not worry about the time.
I will spend time outdoors with my bare feet touching the earth. I will drink cool, clear water. I will play in the rain. I will fly a kite. I will sing and dance and maybe even run or jump just a little bit. I will laugh more and smile more.
I will count how many days we have lived and loved well rather than how many days remain. I will enjoy each day with no expectation of any kind about what lies ahead. I will make sure that every day finds me a little bit better than the last.
This summer I will live deliberately. This summer I will be.

This has been a Finish the Sentence Friday post, where writers and bloggers gather around the week’s prompt. This week’s is “This summer…”
Your host is the always summery Kristi from Finding Ninee. Your co-hosts this week are Allie from The Latchkey Mom, Reta from Calculated Chaos, and me – Lisa from The Meaning of Me.
I have a bunch of kites if you need one! Or better yet you and zilla can make one! That sounds like a Heavenly summer plan… *** what is that light green veg in the left of the veggie photo?
forgot to add it sound very HDT… which is right up your alley!
Well that is quite a compliment as you know how I feel about him! *swoon*
I believe that is a kohlrabi. They are delicious!
It IS a kohlrabi, Kristi! And yes, they are quite delicious. Fun fact: The top search term that lands people at my blog is “creamy kohlrabi soup”! I also have a recipe for a caramelized onion, roasted kohlrabi, and fresh mozzarella crostini. So. Good.
I think I’m answering comments in reverse…Kristi is correct. It is a kohlrabi. Looks like an alien, tastes awesome. Makes great soup.
I’ve heard of kohlrabi but never had it. is it similar to anything else? you know to give me an idea
Some people say potato, some say cauliflower. Some say cabbage. It can be roasted very nicely.
Perfect, Lisa. Just perfect. Embrace these incredible things, for you deserve them all! Here’s to a FULL-FILLING summer,my friend!
Thank you, my friend. Yes, here’s to a FULL-FILLING summer indeed!
Gorgeous, Lisa! This line, especially… “I will count how many days we have lived and loved well rather than how many days remain.” YES. I want to do that. And fly kites and drink clear cool water and stay strong for the remaining years of my life. <3
Thank you, Kristi. It’s a mindset, isn’t it? Less about what we do with the days and more about how we approach the spending of them.

Oh I hope you do live deliberately and have ice cream for dinner. That sounds like the perfect summer
Thanks, Kerri! I’m looking forward to summer in a way I can’t remember doing in far too many years.
“This summer I will be.” I love that! And the ice cream for dinner, well that’s pretty cool too! I hope your summer turns out to be everything you hope for, Lisa. It sounds splendid.
Thanks, Allie. ON super-hot days when you just won’t want to eat? Ice cream for dinner does the trick.
It sounds like you will have a great summer!
That is the plan, Kristi!
Yes. To all of it. Your summer sounds heavenly. I hope the plans unfold just as you described, Lisa. I’m off to walk the dog and will make a point of enjoying the chance to be outdoors and NOT concentrate on what awaits me at home.
I hope so too, Kelly! And yes, enjoy the walk and the moment!
Have posted a comment twice and it’s not showing up. Normal? Hope so. If so, just delete as you see fit. I really am off to walk the dog …
Hi, Kelly. Well, yes, normal…but also not. You are one of my “elite” crew – the people who, despite being delightfully loyal commenters, always end up in my spam! I have no comment moderation set – anybody with a previously approved comment is supposed to get through. No. Idea. So When that happens, just know that you are in there with the cool kids and the minute I log in to look at comments, you shall be released!
That said, I did send you through a bit ago…maybe there’s a delay in posting? Because your comment is dated 12:07 and I just saw it at 12:30. Way to be lame, Internet!
Be girl, be! Love it. I’m inspired by your post to let go and live a little better this summer, too.
That makes me happy!
Ummmmm no offense intended by this, but I’m gonna have a private bet with myself about how many days you last before bedtime flies out the window 😉
None taken! 😀
DO! And I like that you wrote you will think about having a garage sale. Know your limitations. 🙂
Seemed wise. Garage sales don’t go well here. :/
Sounds like a pretty perfect summer to me! Enjoy every moment…especially that ice cream for dinner.
Me, too, Sandy! And Zilla’s already anticipating the ice cream for dinner night!
Lisa, I love this post. I need to put this line on a post it: “I will make sure that every day finds me a little bit better than the last.” I’m all for ice cream for dinner. Just top it with a few peas and its legit.
Goals can only be achieved one step at a time, Julie, so accomplishing a small part of something, or growing just a little bit each day is a good way to approach it.
I can skip the peas – the milk has us covered! 😉
Living deliberately sounds like a lot of fun! We tend to live frantically, which is much the inverse of where you will be headed! But in general, you have a number of laudable goals, including healthy eating (always a favorite of mine!!!) and enjoying all that the world has to offer you. Best of luck; your summer sounds very Thoreau-vian!
Anna, your comment about summer sounding Thoreau-vian makes me dance a little. Thoreau is my favorite (well, one of) and I turn to him often.
Life moves pretty frantically, so seeking the calm and deliberate path is a good way to balance.
Hi Lisa,
So nice to connect through FTSF. It sounds like you have some wonderful things planned for this summer. Ice cream for dinner sounds especially divine! Enjoy all the moments!
Hi, Mimi. Agreed! FTSF is great party. The prompts always make me think!
And ice cream for dinner is certainly getting a lot of votes!
Yes! Living deliberately – that sounds like the perfect plan for summer. For all the time, actually.
I agree, Dana! That is my goal.
