TToT – Lazy and Late
I am late to the party this week.
We’ve had a very lazy weekend and I kinda want to get back to that since the next few will keep us hopping! But I’m going to get this in under the wire, thanks to Dyanne for giving me a little poke.
One of the Rotten Boys came down with something this week and was feeling very poorly. Cat Three puked up everything he had in him around mid-week and then did his typical thing, which is go to hide until he feels better. Only this time it dragged on for a few days so I got worried. I remembered something Dyanne mentioned about one of her kitties being sick recently, so I bounced it off of her. So I’m thankful to Dyanne for stepping in as Doctor Kitty this week. Today, Cat Three seems much more like himself. Right now he’s grooming and primping and I know he walked across the kitchen table at least once today – back to his usual tricks. I’m thankful he seems to be feeling better. I am also quite thankful that his yerf piles landed on hard floors, not carpets. Always a good thing.
This week my Mom, Super Sister, and I went to see Frankie Valli in concert. That was quite possibly the most fun evening I’ve had at a concert. Great music, tons of people singing and enjoying themselves, and Frankie’s backup boys are both talented and adorable. Win. We had a great dinner before the concert which was also awesome. I’m glad we got to spend a fun evening together.
And as an offshoot of that, I’m thankful that Kidzilla and the Hub managed to get through the evening without me with minimal frustration. For some reason, Zilla still likes to give her Fab Dad a hard time when he’s flying solo on bedtime duty. Overall, they had a nice dinner date, played some games, and things didn’t go too terribly off-kilter at bedtime.
I’m thankful that Zilla’s behavior in school was much better this week. Even Friday with costume parade and Halloween party in the mix she did just fine. We had one bump in the road mid-week, but she pulled it together the next day. Once again, her team of teachers has been wonderfully communicative and supportive and for that we are grateful.
I am always thankful that Kidzilla is a willing healthy eater. She’s usually pretty adventurous, with the exception of a recent period of finicky eating. But that seems to be over. This week, she talked me into a horned melon, also known as the kiwano. Like the dragon fruit, this is ugly but delicious. We tried it straight with some banana. I’m thinking it would also be delicious over Greek yogurt with some pomegranate seeds.
Let me go back to Frankie Valli for a minute. We happened to be seated next to a young woman with Down Syndrome and a couple who appeared to be her parents. That girl had such a good time – she kept hugging her parents and thanking them throughout the show. She sang and danced and shook everything she had. She was clearly having the time of her life. At one point, her mother tried to get her to sit down because she thought she was getting in our way – my sister and I assured her it was completely fine. She seemed sad for a minute, then went back to dancing like she had been when she thought no one was watching. I was glad to have been able to see such complete joy.
I am thankful for the extra hour this weekend. Yet another reason to love fall. And Kidzilla and the Rotten Cats seem to be adjusting better than they usually do, so that’s even better.
I am thankful for a fun evening on Friday night. Zilla dressed up for her school parade and Halloween party at school and then we had plans for some trick-or-treating in the evening. We didn’t make it to very many homes at all and Zilla kind of had her heart set on doing it big this year. We ended up spending a couple of hours at our final stop with my Mom, the Super Sister, and Zilla’s Godfather Uncle D. and his wife Aunt D. It was a really fun evening. Zilla only indicated at bedtime that she was slightly disappointed that we only knocked on a couple of doors, but she was really very cool about it. As it turns out, the Great Pumpkin left her a little surprise on the kitchen table the next morning and she was completely delighted to have a new friend to play with.
I am thankful for a lovely lunch date with an old friend, some new information on leads for my self-employed-ness, and some positive connections with parents of Kidzilla’s classmates.
I am thankful for beautiful sunsets that look like the sky is on fire and the best chicken salad ever, made entirely from leftovers in my fridge. We’ll be having the remainder of the chicken salad on toasted Tuscan garlic bread for dinner…so good!
I am thankful that whatever nasty germ Super Sister caught has not showed itself here. Is that wrong? I feel terrible that my Sister feels so awful – gave up show tickets tonight and everything. But we have had enough germ here this fall to last me for quite a while. I’ll make her some soup and leave it on the doorstep if she wants…
In five minutes, I am going to be thankful for my yoga pants.
What about you? What moments made you happy and thankful this week? Share ’em or link ’em! And have a wonderful week ahead!

Tuscan garlic bread sounds AMAZING! I haven’t had garlic bread for SO LONG! I think I might have to arrange some for myself in the near future.
Your week sounds great!! The concert is awesome stuff you got to enjoy, and I’m glad trick or treating went well, in spite of Zilla’s slight disappointment.
The horned melon intrigues me – is it zingy like passion fruit? I don’t think I’ve ever seen one before.
Oh, this bread is amazing. It’s a kind of rustic white loaf from our market’s bakery and they drizzle the top with olive oil and sea salt and garlic when it bakes. Just the right amount of crusty outside/soft inside. THEN I used it to make garlic bread in the oven – melted butter, parsley, and minced garlic poured over the slices. Super-garlic-bread. But the plain old loaf was amazing toasted with our best chicken salad ever, which I will have to post because it was unbelievably good.
It was a great week. And the trick or treat thing was not a big deal – it’s just that she’s old enough to troop around the neighborhood, but both my Mom’s neighborhood and my Uncle’s were really devoid of homes – lots of lights turned off, not many options. Oh, well – we had fun anyway and that’s all that matters.
The horned melon is a lot like passion fruit – the little sections are these tiny edible seeds covered with that green stuff which is jelly-like, just like a passion fruit. So I think you could do just about any of the same type of things with it. It is a bit zingy – a very good word. The reason I thought yogurt was because we sometimes buy a passion fruit fruit-on-the-bottom yogurt here and I definitely think that would work. They are in our market right now, so maybe check yours and you’ll find something? If you like passion fruit, I think you’ll like this.
I’ve never tried a horned melon. I’m not even sure I’ve ever seen one. Good to know it’s delicious! I’ll have to pick one up if I ever find one.
They’re pretty strange – reminds me of a blowfish. Our market has them near the tropical stuff like mangoes, kiwi, starfruit, etc.
I am new to your site…just hopped over from the TToT blog hop…and I’m really unused to TToT…but when I first found it a couple of weeks ago I thought it was a wonderful way to experience a more grateful life and decided to feature it for the entire month on my website. I plan to write TToT every single day this month on my blog’s FB page and to encourage as many of my readers to do the same. AFter all, it’s IMPOSSIBLE to have too much gratitude right? Thanks for helping to inspire me….
Hi, Kathy! And welcome to the TToT! It really is a great thing and you’ll find so many great people and blogs through this link-up.
Focusing on what we have to be thankful for in our lives is a powerful way to keep the eye on the positive.
Sounds like you have a great idea – I’ll look forward to hopping over to your site very soon!
sounds like a totally full week, which, even allowing for the cat-food recycling, ended up well into the positive side.
the concert sounds like it was well worth the effort to make arrangements to be there…as to the fruit, in the words of another Commenter, “what the hell is that thing!?!”
lol ok, maybe no one has said precisely that but I know that Lizzi was thinking it…
goes to show, ‘you can’t tell a book by it’s hideous cover!’
Now there’s a very positive term…cat-food recycling. Much better than the other alternatives!
LOL, I bet you’re right – Lizzi was totally thinking that. It really is good, despite it’s hideous appearance.
Look at your being adventerous. We have been too but haven’t found anything as exciting as horned melon.
Kidzilla and I are pretty adventurous; the Hub less so. So far, the girls in the family haven’t found a vegetable we don’t like. Well, except for lima beans. I really hate those.
It sounds like you are feeling better – another thing to be grateful for in a week that was full of them!
I am definitely back to normal, Tammy! It is so good to be feeling like myself again. 🙂
I can’t believe I didn’t comment on this before tonight! I saw that you posted and wondered if I was the reason you went ahead and wrote a post. Didn’t mean to make extra work for you, but I’m glad you went ahead and wrote a TToT! I always miss it when you don’t.
I’m sooo happy I was in the least bit helpful with Rotten Cat #3! Is he continuing to progress? You have to wonder how cats who never, never, ever go outside manage to get sick.
I’m so impressed that Zilla eats so well! My son is horribly picky, my daughter, less so. I’m fairly picky myself, so I don’t think I would ever be brave enough to try a horned melon. At the Vietnamese festival we go to every August, they have some fruits imported that look, well, interesting, but you can’t get a sampler of them to see if you would like them or not. I don’t want to commit to a whole fruit (and some of them are pretty big) if we’re not going to like it at all. They have dragon fruit – I might be convinced to try that. I like the speckles inside. There’s also something called jackfruit that is supposed to have a “pungent” odor that you have to get past, so no thank you. Plus, it’s GINORMOUS.
Next year, you can bring Zilla to my house to trick or treat. Why not? Everyone else does! 🙂 Glad Olaf cheered her up!
That chicken salad looks delicious (as long as there isn’t celery in it – picky, remember?).
Frankie Valli concert sounds fun. How sweet of that girl next to you to keep thanking her parents for taking her!
Glad you missed getting Super Sister’s super bug. STAY WELL, YOU!
You were indeed the reason, but it’s not extra work – I should’ve been doing it anyway and I just needed a push. So thanks.
You were very helpful with Cat Three and he seems to be back to his normal pain-in-the-butt self. He dropped a few pounds so he’s looking trimmer – not necessarily a bad thing, I guess. But he’s eating well and grooming like crazy, which is kind of his thing. His eyes are bright again and he even ran up the stairs today. I am so glad he feels better. But don’t tell anyone…I like to pretend I have a strong dislike for these three. 😉
Zilla is a wonderful eater and always has been with the exception of about two finicky weeks last month. Seriously, that’s the only trouble she ever gave us. The horned melon is not weird at all. OK, not true – it is totally weird. But it tastes great. At first, it smells kind of like banana with a hint of citrus. The taste is a little tangy, a little zingy. It’s great on yogurt. Kidzilla had hers with a sliced banana – also good. I like the idea of the fruit sampler – a great way to test drive without making a full commitment. I have to admit, it’s daring to try these things but this kid is so adventurous and I have yet to hit one I didn’t like either, so we’re pretty safe. Dragon fruit is very cool – did you see the picture in my Smoothie Week post??? It’s so bizarre and so cool. They come in white with black specks or pink with black specks. I have yet to turn up a pink one at our market. I’ve heard of jackfruit – we haven’t tried that yet.
Zilla amazes me with her food sensibilities. We definitely have food genes (I am SO a mis-directed chef), but her palate and sensitivity to flavor is remarkable. She can pick out herbs and spices in dishes. The other night I gave her a starfruit and she described it as “apple with a little bit of kiwi” which is spot-on.
She really did have a great time Friday night – just was looking forward to some “big kid” traipsing around the neighborhood but the neighbors just weren’t having it.
No celery in my chicken salad – I NEVER eat celery. Useless vegetable, if you ask me.
Super Sister has a sinus infection complete with laryngitis and pharyngitis…antibiotics, nose spray, etc. I am thus far free from her germ. (Knocks wood)
She really
I KNEW we would be friends forever, but you really nailed it with the “no celery” thang.
Jackfruits are HUGE. Kind of watermelon-ish. That’s a big commitment!
YES, I saw the dragon fruit on your smoothie post!
You are obviously an amazing cook. I’m thinking about writing a soup post from the anti Lisa-the-chef 🙂
Celery is the most useless vegetable on the planet. Seriously. What a waste of time and energy. Considering that it can help lower blood pressure and reduce arthritis pain, I probably should love it. But I don’t.
I need to look at my store for a jackfruit. It just sounds awesome. What does it taste like???
I’m a pretty fair cook – thanks. 🙂 You’re going to do a soup post from me??? Awesome! So I’m the anti-chef now? I think I might like that…
And hell yeah we have to be friends forever! 😀
I don’t know that I’ve ever seen horned melons – that is one ugly fruit!
Sounds like a nice mix for the week and I LOVE lazy weekends so yay for that.
I got a bit misty with your description of the girl at the concert – I love the picture of her dancing like no one is watching. Such joy is wonderful to watch.
Beautiful sunsets, Olaf and yoga pants? Sounds like a great week to me!
That poor little fruit is definitely ugly – but he tasted good!
I have to admit that I was more than a little misty watching her – just couldn’t help myself. It was a great thing to have witnessed.
We get awesome sunsets up here on Witch Mountain (my little nickname for our hilltop). A definite benefit of our location.
