TToT – Light at the End of the Tunnel?
Could there be light at the end of the tunnel with this upper respiratory nonsense?
I thought I was pulling out of it earlier in the week and then Kidzilla came home from school at 10:30 on Monday morning with School Crud – that’s the technical term for whatever respiratory germ a particular school building is sharing.
Sure enough, with my resistance already low from the allergy attacks, I also ended up with the School Crud, which turned swiftly to bronchitis. It was inevitable, really, with so much strain on my immune system lately. One of the pitfalls of living with RA. (And I still hold firm to my belief that all of this is a direct result of not properly feeding my system with nutrient-packed smoothies during the last two weeks of summer.) The Fab Hub has a mild version of it and so does Super Sister (yup, same building). I’m hoping this will finally be the end of it all and by the time we have company here next Saturday evening, the germs will be gone and the house will be clean once again.
But in spite of the upper respiratory bug that reigns here right now, we’ve had some positives this week for sure. I won’t get to ten and I do not have the stamina to look for a clever photo. And considering that I’m doing this while still feeling relatively lousy, I’m calling in an exemption from the SGV – and no dance is required since it would very likely make me cough.
We had a great meeting with Kidzilla’s team of teachers this week. She has made great progress since last year and is settling nicely into the rhythm of first grade.
If you missed it earlier in the week, I joined in at Coach Daddy’s place for his Six Words post this month. Click over to see what I and lots of other bloggers are “chicken of.”
I got a serious haircut this week – finally! I thought I’d let it grow for a while so I could wear it up more easily. Suddenly, it was long and lacking anything resembling style so it was time to lop it off. Forty-five minutes later I had a sassy new ‘do and found that my stylist is also allergic to – are you ready? – corn smut! So we had a good laugh about that and shared some experiences.
I’d like to say I had a successful first attempt at homemade bread. I did not. But I did make a killer kugel for the Hub’s family’s Rosh Hashanah dinner on Thursday evening, bronchitis and all. The Hub and Kidzilla love it and it’s wicked simple. As for the bread…well, let’s just say that hubris is a dangerous thing and it got in the way of my bread-making. I’m pretty sure there’s a post in there, so come back during the week for that story.
I’m thankful for a father-in-law who happens to be a doctor and came to my rescue with an antibiotic this week. I’m thankful for my knowledge of home remedies to help with the discomfort and annoying cough that comes with bronchitis. Nature is an amazing healer. Right now I’m thankful to be out of bed and not coughing incessantly. I think I may finally be truly on the upswing with this respiratory distress of the last few weeks. Fingers crossed!
And with that list, I will now take my leave and head for a nap. Rest is still the best remedy for what ails you and I would really like to be back to normal.

You deserve a break!!!! Lord have mercy! Both kids have been battling colds since school started. I’ve managed to hold off until now.
Wish I could see that haircut. Mine is perpetually pulled back or up and completely lacking in style.
I seem to remember now that we have family religious mix in common. I’ve never made kugel.
‘Tis the season, right? I am so tired of being congested and all the rest – enough!
That’s where I was – I wanted to be able to put it up easily during the summer, but it reached a point where that’s all I was doing and anything else looked horrible. This is light and layered and sassy. Love.
Kugel is simple – if you can boil water and turn on the oven, you’re covered. 😀
First Corn Smut, now School Crud–whether CS or SC, I hope you get over it soon!
Me, too!!!
We had a bit of a sore throat this week …I juiced fresh basil with my pineapple. After two mornings of that I have not had a sore throat. It was on a whim but when I looked it up I was quite amazed at its healing properties.
School crud…..yeah… I have had the kid on elderberry and zinc since school started.. I am almost ready to pitter it out but still the threat of school crud makes me nervous.
Yes, that combo would be spot-on for a sore throat. Basil seems to have anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, so that works. The bromelain in pineapple is also anti-inflammatory and the punch of vitamin C doesn’t hurt, either! Glad that worked for you! I am always amazed at the healing properties of food, tea, and herbs.
School Crud is nearly unavoidable, I think. The conditions are just prime for picking it up. After a while, though, I think they build up an immunity to most of whatever lurks there. Best you can do is get the kid to eat right and get plenty of sleep – best preventive care there is! Good luck!
I’m so proud of you for finding gratitude in the same week you encountered School Crud.
It’s good to have something positive to look forward to. Hopefully by next weekend your whole family will be feeling human again for the company that comes over.
Yeah, that was an effort – School Crud is so nasty. I just want it gone from my house! I am really hoping to wake up Monday morning feeling a thousand times better.
There’s always a light at the end of the tunnel. Hope you feel better soon.
This is true. Thanks for the well wishes.
Susan, I love reading your blog and I always want to comment…but it won’t let me!
Most of all, you’re a Thankful yourself for writing this, despite it all. Prayers your way to recover speedily!
Aw, thanks, Michelle. 🙂
Tea with honey and lemon juice is my Go To whenever my throat hurts. I hope you and yours will be School Crud free soon!
Thanks, Tinne! I hope so, too!
Oh, feel better. You have really had a bad time with this. I love me some noodle kugel. My niece makes it sometimes. Nothing like a sassy new hairdo to perk you up. What is corn smut? Wishing you a speedy recovery.
I am definitely trying, Val.
Corn smut is my arch-nemesis. You can read all about it here: http://www.themeaningofme.com/ttot-mexican-delicacies-and-a-love-letter-of-sorts/
It is something that grows on corn and I am allergic to it. Oh, yes, and I live across the street from a corn field. Awesome.
Thanks for the well wishes, Val. And how come we don’t have any WWF games going??
…just having the feeling of ‘being on the upswing’ can make all the difference in the world with these kinds of things. Totally agree. rest as much as possible, allow the body to do it’s thing.
The only problem with the theory of rest is the coughing…as soon as I fall asleep, the coughing begins and I’m awake again. If I could just get that to stop…
Good grief, Lisa! You were supposed to be better by now! I’m so sorry the school crud go ahold of you. Coughing is the worst. OK, next week. NEXT WEEK you will be celebrating your good health.
Oh do I need a haircut. My next free morning, I’m getting one. Sassy, huh? I think I’ll ask for that. 🙂
I know, I know! Believe me, I am ready to be over this! Coughing is terrible and there is really nothing to be done about it. I am desperately hoping that you are right about this being gone by next TToT!
I am so glad I got my haircut. Yes, sassy. Ask for that.
I’ve found that sometimes that light at the end of the tunnel is from the microwave telling me my 2 a.m. nachos await.
You’re a gamer, banging it out while you’re under the weather. I like that.
Well, I’m not sure this is exactly on my game, but it was an effort, at least. Thanks for the cheers.
Now I’m thinking about 2AM nachos and that doesn’t seem like such a bad idea…
Oh my gosh – you are going to find a way to put that disgusting oh-too-visual phrase in every post aren’t you? Just so you can picture me squirming!
Sorry you’re dealing with so many health challenges. I got some crud myself this week – can barely speak today (and my husband’s OK with that!), but I don’t feel too bad. I’m convinced that it is a result of getting so little sleep over the past few weeks – I know better than that. And yet . . . no point getting things done timely when I can wait until the very last minute and pull an all-nighter to meet a deadline!
Hope you’re feeling better soon.
What, corn smut? I just might. 😉
Too little sleep is probably part of my problem, too. I’m a put it off and do an all-nighter girl myself. I really try to fight it, but old habits die hard.
Thanks for the well wishes.
I really, really, REALLY REALLY REALLY hope you get properly better soon! It sucks that you got pulled back into the undertow by another bug 🙁
That said, well done for participating at all, and for getting the baking done.
I hope the rest does you lots and lots of good.
You need to send some sparkly magic somethingorother over here because if I don’t get better soon, I am going to lose my mind!
Oh, you poor thing! Can’t believe you’ve had allergy crud plus school crud. That hardly seems fair! Do you think you caught what Clark has had, vicariously, through the wonders of the internet?!
Glad the meeting with Zilla’s teaching team went well. I would imagine she thrives under the more structured nature of first grade as compared to kindergarten.
I need a picture of you with the new haircut. When you’re feeling better, of course. I’ll wait….
I don’t know…I’ve had one thing or another in my respiratory system since the last week of August. The question is, did I give it to Cleark? Or did he give it to me?
Yes, she seems to be settling into first grade well. We’re kind of holding our breath, waiting to see if it’s for real…
Yeah, nobody wants a picture of me now in the throes of Crud of All Kinds. Not pretty.
So glad you made it over – it makes me sad when you don’t read! 🙂
I’ll never forsake you again!!!
Aw, I’m so glad. 🙂
Did you love that brownie recipe for your candy pumpkins??
Just when I thought you had your feet back under you! I think bronchitis is an occupational hazard for those of us who work with kids. And once you have had your first serious round of the stuff, it seems it is always anxious to return. Hope you guys have your creepy cruds all behind you for the rest of the year!
And do not give up on that bread. You will nail it. And when you do, you will be so hooked!
It really is. And here I thought that I’d be somehow exempt from the possibility given that I have left classroom teaching. However. I have been volunteering in Kidzilla’s school and that is a whole new set of germs – and little kid ones at that!
I am sadly one of those who fall into the “chronic bronchitis” category so you are too right about having it come back over and over. But I’ve been good for several years…until now. I’m really fighting to get this out of here once and for all!
I think my first bread was a mistake from the word go. It turned out to be a good lesson, though, and I’m working on a post.
I had a horrible bronchitis last fall, and I totally feel with you. Hope the anti-biotics and immune-supporters help you get back on your feet quickly!
How awesome that your kiddo is getting settled in school. Lily, too, is enjoying 1st grade, even though there are some issues like completing her homework tidy 🙂 Have you started giving your girlie an allowance yet? Lily got her 3rd allowance this Monday (we give it to her weekly), and she’s saving it ever since. Can’t wait to see what’s going to be the first thing she buys with er very own money 🙂
Have a great week, and get better soon!!
I saw the doctor today – the big issue at the moment is asthma complications. I have my marching orders and this should get me back under control. Thanks for the well wishes, Stephanie.
These little first grade girlies are so great, aren’t they? We have not started the allowance yet, mostly because I’ve been so under the weather and our routine and focus are very off here right now. I think we will start with the new month. Zilla is already quite a little saver – any birthday or holiday gifts of money go right into her piggy bank. She has a three-bank system for different types of funds – paper, silver coin, and pennies. So funny! But I think the allowance will be different than gift money – it’s a little more ownership for her.
Hoping by the next TToT to be back on my game! Have a great week, too!
I can sympathize with your situation. Just when you think you’re doing well and getting over a cold, you catch something from a little kid. I get that all the time with my students. It actually makes me mad how few of them cover their mouths when they sneeze. I wash my hands after I teach them. Thankfully my wife is a nurse and takes care of me when I get sick. She’s so wonderful for doing that.
That’s a great arrangement, having a nurse right there at home! Kids are germy little things – no way around that! I guess it’s a good thing they’re cute because they’re really pretty disgusting. 😀
OMG Bronchitis SUCKS. I’ve had it several times as well and ouch. I hope you’re on the mend soon and the fact you could even do this post, while feeling so crappy? You rock. Also, please post a photo of your haircut before and after???
Yup, that’s a word. This has been long and complicated and I’m really anxious to be back on my feet at full capacity.
🙂
Oh honey!!! I was coming over to check in on you and after reading this, I am SO bummed you are feeling so lousy still!! I hate that you have to endure such a tough season of respiratory crap and crud and allergies!! Bless your heart for doing this post with the little energy you have- and for STILL managing to find thankfuls despite the yucks. I am praying you heal from it all… SOOOOOOON!!
And yes-
Rest.
Thanks, Chris. I will take all the prayers you have. Know why? Still. Not. Better. 🙁
