Unresolved
This was never the plan.
Your choice, but my fault – my failure – as certain as if I provided the weapon.
Forever my soul will haunt the hallways of regret, closing doors on what should have been.
We remain unresolved.

Written in response to the YeahWrite #342 Microprose Challenge: Write a complete story in exactly 39 words incorporating the word haunt.
Was the picture part of the prompt? The hallways of regret hint at setting, situation. There’s a lot of haunt in those 39 words.
Thanks, D. No, I grabbed the pic after the fact. I had to use a bit of Charli’s TUFF on this to get it down to size, so I was trying to “pack a punch.” 😀
Hallways of regret is so beautiful and haunting. Haven’t we all been there?
Thank you, Sara. And yes, I suspect everyone has visited there for at least a little while.
39 words filled with emotion most can relate to. Well done.
Thank you, Patricia!
“Haunt the hallways of regret” is a lovely phrase and image. There’s just enough alliteration to make it interesting without going over the top.
Thank you! I liked that one. Alliteration is a tricky bird.
I find myself wanting to know more about this story!
There is always more to every story… Thanks for reading!
I like how this ends with the word “unresolved,” leaving both the characters and the reader in a place of uncertainty. So much told and untold simultaneously.
Thank you, Abby. I’m glad that feeling came through!
